Broken serving; this could work.

Post by skyhunter »

Well I have been shooting the Phoenix for about 2 weeks on and off and took maybe 70 shots and waxed the serving 2X.

This serving broke today and I have been aware from reading this forum that this is a common problem.

I have a few questions:

1) are the serving materials used today the same as in the past; are they the basic nylon type?
2) Isn't there a better material to use for this purpose seeing that it is a big problem with crossbows?
3) wouldn't one of the spectra fiber super braided type fishing lines work for this purpose?

Well I will find out. I served my string today with 80lb "offshore angler" super braided line, which has about the same diameter as the serving that broke.

I did the scissor test on both, and the regular serving cut easily with one cut, while the spectra fiber needed a half dozen trys to cut it.

We will see what happens. . . :?:

It will interesting to see what happens.
How did you get tension on the serving material when you applied it? Do you have a serving tool?
If I were to serve my string while on the bow I would remove the string and unwind it a few urns, that way when you re-twist it the serving will tighten a bit more.
Keep us posted.

BCY's crossbow serving is:

Approx. breaking strength: 175 lb. test
Spool size: 45 yd. jig spool
Brownell's is:
100% HMPE material. Resin coated for that needed durability. .036 diameter.
