Congrats on a fine rack. Just a side thought, your description of the condition, does this give any concern as to the quality of the meat for table fare?

After gutting the deer (nasty smelling) and looking how skinny he was, I decided he was not edible. I have been donating my deer to the Feed the Hungry program here in NW Ohio anyway, (I keep the loins and straps )but still didn't want to donate... just in case there was something wrong with the meat. As skinny as he was, not much meat wasted anyway. A buddy of mine helped pulled him out of the truck and said he weighed 110-115 lbs.... not sure what his live weight would have been. (150?) I figure I did him a favor... got him off our farm (he wasn't able to breed anyway) and saved him from suffering. The rack is pretty nice and the old velvet hanging down is definately different. I wonder how old he was... I'm going to ask the taxidermist that skins it today what he thought. He'll make good coyote bait.

I used to shoot Thunderhead 100's... had trouble with them planing. After reading this forum I went to 1" Slick Tricks (100g) I don't think I will ever shoot any other type. This one took out the shoulder, busted thru a rib and then finally made it (I will admit... not much) into the lung. There were several factors that helped me get this deer. 200lb Exocet blasted thru the shoulder blade and rib and made it to the lung. (I don't think my old crossbow would have done that), the Slick Trick was a bit smaller fixed blade which helped it to punch thru the bone, the Luminok helped up located the deer in our corn field after a 2 hour search. (I saw the red beacon before I actually found the buck) No blood to speak of... it all ended up in the belly. These forums are fantastic for information. It also keeps each individual from learning from mistakes... you can learn from everyone else and make the right decision on your equipment the very first time. Can you tell I'm very much sold on Excalibur, Slick Tricks and Luminoks? LOL
