Off Coloured Moose ..
Hello Everyone ..
I received this email today from a close friend of mine .. I do not know the author of the email or pics and cannot source the story but truely a once in a lifetime experience and I thought I would share ..
"Hey Everyone,
Well, we had a successful hunt this year. We had a cow and a calf tag and we were able to find exactly what we were looking for (cow and calf). Our hunting tactics worked exactly to plan, after finding cow and calf tracks on the road, we were able to make educated guesses as to where they were headed. Matt and I headed to the back of a new logging cut and low and behold, a few minutes later, I spotted something moving in the very back of the cut, near the tree line!!! Although, what my eyes finally focussed on, was not exactly what I thought I was looking for. You see, I was looking for something "brown"........... not........... white?? As you can see in the attached photos, they kind of blend in with the birch trees.
I was able walk in on them about 50 - 75 yards and get closer pictures. The white moose are protected and you are not allowed to shoot them. Matt stayed a ways back by the truck, and I believe he figured out about a thousand different ways that he would have shot them if they were in fact brown!!!! Anyway, enjoy the pictures. Even though we didn't get our moose, it was still a really excited experience to be able to walk in, and get that close to them. The Cow knew something was around because her ears were always moving and pin pointing my location, and she was constantly smelling the air. "
Cheers,
Robin

Yup, a couple years ago they put a ban on shooting white colored moose. If I remember correctly the biologist claim that it is a sub species varient...I am not a geneticist, but I don't buy it...In fact, I think their white coloration is a weakness that leaves them succeptable to predation.
Anyhew, I bet you were hunting near Folyete, Chapleau or south of Kap...I know because I grew up in that neck of the woods

They are more succeptable to predation because they no longer blend into their surroundings (except winter) and stand out like a sore thumb.
Don't know if you have ever seen a moose in a swamp, but their fur can make them really tough to see at times.

I might be getting old but if I were to happen upon such a beautiful sight and the harvest was allowed I would choose to enjoy the moment and let em walk ..bugs wrote:Ontario does not allow the shooting of predomintately coloured white moose (50% or more) in WMU 30 & 31 - in the regulations guide
I guess blending in has alot to do with the season .. Each is equally vulerable for about 6 months of the year ..
Just my opinion from up here in the cheap seats ..
