meat buck ?
hear the term "meat buck" alot and wonder instead of shooting that small of a buck, why not shoot a doe and let those smaller deer grow and mature. not tryin to offend anyone just my 2 cents

It's just a matter of goals and priority. If you hunt to put food on the table, then a smaller buck is much better eating than a larger buck. In some areas there are not as many deer as in other areas. So, the option of taking a doe may not be available.
Anyway, there are a lot of great reasons to shoot the small buck. However, if you are a big rack hunter, then none of those reasons are good ones.
As long as the motivation keeps hunters in the woods, then I'm a supporter. Otherwise, hunting lands and traditions go into the trash.

In my area of Ontario, we have to apply for an ANTLERLESS permit, and if
not successful you must only shoot horns 3 inches or longer. In my area if
you are a horn hunter you may have very few chances and may only get tag soup for your efforts.Also in my area the government in their great
wisdom of handing out many multiple permits for years now have basically shut the tap off.This year I only saw does in the early archery season---but I was lucky enough to get a 4 point with my .308----it may have been the only horned deer I would get to see---and I am a meat

Those guys that are obsessed with antlers just turn my stomach! I have been holding my tongue on this issue but the developments over the past three days here at the forum just wanna make ya puke. You can see the high entry wound (shot from a tree stand) and the massive loss of blood he suffered. This was the exact position/location he died in! He died very quickly, having traveled only about 45 yards. Looked to me like he stopped, collapsed, and that was the end.

I think we may be overreacting a mite to this politically correct nonsense wabi. Let's face it. The blood is all part of it. Acting like morticians (no offense undertaker) and cleaning and posing our harvested deer just seems so hypocritical to me anymore.
I know we say the anti's use the pictures to their advantage but I really question just how much fuel we give them with a picture of a deer with some blood versus one with a prepared corpse posed with a weapon.
If you remember the story I posted with all the pictures of the gray face buck, I included several pictures of a very large and graphic blood trail. It was part of the deal. I didn't gas him. I didn't use a tranquilizer dart. I smoked him with a razor sharp broadhead. And he bled.
I don't know guys. I am struggling with this issue.
Maybe I will change my mind when I get my hands on my new camera.

Oh sorry to go of topic there...but yes meat hunters I did alot of that in my younger days till I got married OOPPPs did it again..
I ment to say that around these parts you wait on a big boy you may never kill a buck..to many poverty striken folks ( some just trash that dont care) that kill deer year around just to eat. I cant say i blame them if your starvin you do what you got to. If I was manageing a place I would be more selective. Down on the river bottom where I hunt racks I do pass on the young fellers. last year saw twin 8 pointers that if they made it will be monsters this year and ifn i get a poke at them they are in trouble..early in the season I love to pop doe to eat. Its personel. I have had so many doe bust me and blow at me that the score will never be settled there.LMAO. I enjoy with a certain passion downing a mature doe for sure. Some are more educated than most bucks and are very hard to kill.

I'll take a 2 1/2 year old pre-rut buck over a rutted out bruiser anyday. I've eaten them before and do not care for the results.
They're all "meat bucks" anyhow.

In many parts of southern ontario, the buck to doe ratio is so spread, that more does need to be taken.
For instance, I had 16 deer in front of me tonight. 15 were does and fawns and one was a young 8 pt. Now I know there are a few more bucks around, but still not anywhere near 1:1 or 1:2 even.
And when it seems the rut starts around here, a ton of small bucks get shot.
This year I have had pics of one mature buck only. Atleast what I would consider a mature buck. 3.5-4.5 years plus.
Personally I would much rather shoot a doe then a small buck with the hopes that some day that small buck will be a big guy.
Pretty tough to do though when you are surrounded by the spray and prayers, and one week hunters. "If its brown, its down".
To each their own though.
