refletching a bolt

Post by macobow »

What's a good fletching jig for this job? I lost one fletch when my bolt went thru a buck's lungs the other day. :)

If you are just wanting to get by cheap and effective, then I'd suggest an AZ EZ Fletcher. It's easy and does a very good job. It's perfect for repairs and the occasional arrow building.

If you want to get serious and build custom arrows by the dozens, then go with someone's elses suggestion.

I use the AZ EZ Fletcher too and it can be used to fletch a half dozen arrows in under an hour. I like it.

To repair your lost fletching you'll need to know what degree offset was used to match up with the other 2 vanes. Or you can strip the other 2 vanes, remove glue, clean with acetone then clean with 99% isopropyl alcohol (no oil) and re-fletch the whole arrow in whatever degree offset you get with the jig you buy. Offset is a whole topic of discussion here. Some guys use Straight (1 degree), 2 degree, 4 degree, right helical and they all have an opinion as to what is the perfect offset. I use right helical on the Phoenix with 2" NAP QuickSpin ST Hunter vanes and hit the bullseye every time out to 40 yards. Some will say that is too much offset though. But I say if it works you can't argue with it. I believe Excal (made by Easton) arrows are 4 degree offset.

Good luck. Once you get into fletching it quickly turns into a great past time that can cost you some cash on tackle boxes full of pretty fletching gear. But I love being able to do field repairs at the hunt camp the evening after I destroy arrows.

do I order a special nock reciever with that Arizona fletcher? I'm unfamiliar with doing bolts... have done regular arrows for years with my Bitz and Jo-Jan fletching jigs.

No problem . . .you are still fletching arrows. Just a little shorter. You can still use the jigs you have. I think the guys here make their own adapter.

If you decide to get an AZ EZ, then order the one for alum. arrows because that's the size arrow you will be fletching.

thanks Sumner and all... I have Millers Killers and I think the nock end is threaded... I can probably rig up an adaptor.
