Ruttin' Buck N' Receptive Doe
Well, folks, "love is in the air" here in Tyrrell County, NC. I haven't been doing much hunting lately because of bear season and the great nor'easter flood ... but it's the peak of the rut here ... so I decided last night to get out and kill a couple this morning (if I could!). It was a perfect day for it; the flood-waters have receded somewhat, and it's somewhat cooler, and it was pretty foggy. I knew the deer would be lookin' for love, so I got Ol' Death Wind ... my much-used and beloved Ruger M77 .30-'06, and set up to watch two field edges here on my farm.
Within ten minutes, I shot this beautiful big doe at 117 yards, full broadside, through the lungs. Thirty minutes later, I shot the buck at 157 yards, full broadside, through the lungs. She ran twenty yards; he crumpled on the spot. Both were big deer (for here), killed cleanly ... dead in seconds.
I gutted them, kept the tenderloins, and gave both deer to a needy family who lost their house to a fire some time ago.
I absolutely love hunting right here at home ... it's hard to beat that.
I'll wait and see whether I submit this buck for the contest, 'cause he's just a small one. Nothing to "write home about" ... I know ... but we don't grow 'em very big, compared to many places.
Anyhow, gotta go ... just wanted to share with the "family"!

Yeah ... right!bstout wrote:You take a good picture, Grizz.
Note the three-sizes too big tee-shirt that I threw on in haste this morning ... and the way-too-small hat! I can't find a hat to fit my head! LOL
I told April to take a quick pic to send my brother Eric ... but thought I'd put it on here, too ... I don't have anything to hide!

Ray, that doe was all hot and bothered ... she was ready to breed.raydaughety wrote:Way to go Grizz!!! Was the buck chasing does before you whacked him? Tyler shoots the same gun but his is a .243 "compact". It gets the job done. If my back would ease up a little I'd love to hit the woods for a bit . Congradulations!!!!!!!!
The buck was peeing on his hind legs when I shot him.
They were in the same area, both on the hunt ... but I don't think they were an "item"!
The bucks are really cruising here right now ... have been for several days. That nor-easter must have really stirred 'em up!

I'm certainly thankful you hid what you hid.Grizzly Adam wrote:I don't have anything to hide!
Congrats on a nice double. That's some fine looking deer. Good shooting!

Doubles can bite you!
Saw as big a buck as I've ever seen tonight ... but he was "out of bounds" ... 'cause these two made up the daily bag limit!
Now ... if I hadn't killed these two this morning, would I even have seen that humongous buck?
No worries, though ... it's all good!
