Son bags a wet VA doe

Post by DuckHunt »

Last Saturday was the rifle opening day in VA. It was wet in Northern Virginia. My son didn't bag one last season so was really looking forward to filling a tag this year. We got out there despite the weather bright and early. We climbed the mountain and was set up in a fallen treetop about 45 minutes before legal shooting hours.

About 30 minutes before legal light, which is still fairly dark, we had a fox come within 20 feet of us. He actually came to the end of our log before I noticed him and said something to my son and everyone was surprised.

We got wet. The expected drizzle was a heavy drizzle bordering on slow rain. My son spent more time searching the inside of his eyelids than for deer. He's just not a 4:30am wakeup kind of person. :)

At 7am I had just turned to say something to him and double checked his viewing area when I turned back to check my direction. This nice sized doe had walked right up on us from our back side. As I turned back to look she was no more than 10 yards away and closing quick. I said to my son DEER and instantly he and the deer turned. He got to see just how close she had gotten (<8 yards) as she bolted up the ridge. She ran out about 50 yards and stopped to look back at us. 8) By then my son had is Remington .308 swung around on a rest and was ready for action. He took a good aim and squeezed. On the shot she invoked the classic donkey kick and took off over the hill. I knew she was hit hard so we continued to sit. After about 30 minutes I decided we should probably retrieve her due to the weather and its a good thing I did. The easy to find blood was starting to wash away. I think I could have found her anyway as she only went about 75 yards. We only saw two other small doe before 9am when we decided to call it a day.

Here is the happy hunter and his photo op.

Since my daughter had done it before, he wanted to drag this one out all by himself. Who am I to disagree. He had a much bigger task since the doe weighted a bit more than he does. At least the first part is down hill. :)

Its this part of the drag that is just no fun at all. He was having fun rutting up the yard trying to get traction on the wet ground.

More often, this is the pose I strike at this point in the drag. :)

It was a good day despite the bad weather.

Congratulations to him!!!!!!!!!!!
It's rare to see someone actually drag one out with all the ATVs in use anymore, but it brings back memories (some not so good  ).

Your son did well. Glad to see that he isn't afraid of work and of finishing the job after the trigger is pulled.
