My son shot one a year or two ago, we tried it, didn't care for it too much though. Could have been the way it was prepared.
We are not likely to try it again it was more of a lesson in hunting than it was a desire to eat a rodent.

My granny used to make the best squirrel dumplings around. Hadn't had them in a while, she's 94 now and doesn't cook anymore, I miss that. I've had them smothered too, also good.

Lots a butter
I like them in a purlou
They have been entertaining me all hunting season.
I use them for pratice,If I can get my bow/rifle up and ready to fire while a squirrel is 20 yards away,I'm doing good.

I have a nasty red one that lives behind my stand.... I do my best to imitate a tree, but he still busts me. I wish someone would eat him!

Thanksgiving evening my son wanted to shoot some tree rats instaed of deer and after an hr and a half he was back with 9 of 'em. Limit is 10 per day here. Cleaned up and in the freezer.
Boil them for about 10-15 mins then season to your liking and put em in a slow cooker or better yet IMO, put 'em on the pit with medium heat and lather em up with a good BBQ sauce the last few minutes of cooking.
mmmmm.....yum yum!

My grandma always made squirrel pie:
slow cook squirrels, with onions, garlic and other spices. let them cool and remove all the meat. In a pot, soften onions and garlic, add fresh assorted vegetables (carrots, peas, beans etc). Add beef stock and a little red wine or dark beer like Guinness. Bring to a boil, then thicken with cornstarch (make it very thick like oatmeal) Add in the squirrel meat, then pour mixture into a pie crust. I make a biscuit topping, or you can use pastry or even mashed potatoes......ALL GOOD. Bake till browned and bubbly! Its always the first thing gone at my wild game dinners.....I have made believers out of the folks who think their too good for tree rat pie! Tones of fun to shoot, and great to eat. Enjoy!

Wouldn't be hunting...if you got them all the time!
They were a staple growing up in Eastern Kentucky. If I had a buck for each one I have eaten I could buy several nice toys.Grizzly Adam wrote:Guarantee you that, Pyd.Pydpiper wrote: Could have been the way it was prepared.
If I had a dollar for every squirrel I've eaten, I could buy a nice toy!
