i was on my way to work this morning in the dark when something hit the side of my van. i had no idea what it was but hit hard so i turned around to see what it was .i stopped and found a small owl i thought was a skrech owl looked dead so i thought i would take it and show the guys at work but got a big surprise as i pulled in the gate at work the thing stood up on the passenger seat and turn his head 180 and looked at me out of one eye .could not believe it the poor thing was dazzed so i put in in a small cage and called the mnr and was told about the Canadian Raptor Conservitory near Portdover i called james there and he said he could help the bird if i could get it to him .so after work my wife and i drove him down there .james says its a male and he has a little problem with a wing and right eye but thinks with a little time he will be able to set him free i hope so he was a very nice bird .james also said this owl gets it's name from the sound it makes .he said it's like taking a saw and holding each end and as you bend it it will make a noise. here are some pics for anyone that may not have seen one .

WOW what a beautiful bird. It is great that because of you that owl will likely get to return to his life in the wild. He may not have survived otherwise.

Cool Even when perfectly healthy, saw-whet owls tend to act very dopy in the day-time. I once came across one perched on a branch at eye level, it just stared and blinked from 2 feet away!

Alot of people including anti hunters usually have no idea how compasionate and caring hunters are.
What a cool looking guy there.
I think it's great that he knew you were no threat.

Hope to hear he recovers and is returned to the wild.
I had a Cooper's hawk with a broken wing in my yard a few years ago. Caught him and called the wildlife officer, who picked him up and took him to a re-hab center. Never did hear if he was able to be released into the wild again, but I guess the wildlife officer is too busy to follow up on every incident.
That's cool ! ... Over the years , I have encountered many saw whet owls while hunting ... sometimes a dog will lock on point and I'm kicking around the base of a pine tree thinking a pheasant or rabbit will bust out ... only to see a small saw whet owl staring at me from the inside branches .
They are real cute , and they don't seem to fear humans ... they are very aproachable and are probably the most photgraphed of all the owls in our area .
Hope the little guy helas up !

Years ago I owned a camp in North Central Pa, There was a lane about 2 miles long to get to the cabin. The whety's would fly down and capture bugs that were attracted to the headlights after dark when we drove back to camp. I always slowed down and made sure they got their fill before I arrived. Was reaaly neat to watch.
