I'm in "THE CLUB"!!!

Post by Bob64 »

Just dry fired by exomax! I can't believe that I actually did this. I heard about people dry firing their crossbows but thought "how could anyone do such a thing", all you have to do is cock the darn thing and put and arrow in. Well I can now say "been there, done that". Anyway, I checked the limbs visually and all looked well so I shot it again and everything seemed fine. I have an STS mounted on the bow and am using an Excalibur flemish string. Any thoughts??? Should I be checking something else??

I'd shoot it several times, then go over the limbs by rubbing them with a cotton ball while it's cocked to be sure there are no splinters.
If it passes the cotton ball test it's probably fine!

And "Welcome to the club!"
You're among several members who thought the same thing - "How can anyone do that!"

Bummer to hear about the dry fire mishap. Hope your bow is okay!!

I've had a couple Excal's over the last few years and so far I have yet to have a dry fire incident.

Did it one day myself. Target shooting and shot the bow. Heard a funny noise. Walked up to the target to see where my arrow went. Walked around the yard looking for it. Went back to my bow and went to get a arrow and seen 4 in the quiver still. Just stood there looking at the quiver with four arrows before I realized what I did. Then I noticed every little improfection in the limbs. Called excalipur and asked about it. Improfections were not from dryfire but from the manufactureing process. Must say Excalipur was good to me about it and never called me a dumby or anything. :D Just explained that I would see fibres hanging out if the limbs went south and how to check it and make sure. hehehe I didn't know cause only had crossbow for a week at that point. All was well and no damage to bow or string. It happens, many just won't say it happened.

Thanks for the feedback. Apart from feeling like a dork, I just hope I didn't mess up my bow.

Done that, changed my shorts and shot a deer all within 45 mins of the dry fire incident.

Read on here a great idea involving an elastic and the safety.

Dry firing a bow is sort of in the same type of club as locking one's keys inside the car or truck. For years I just shook my head not understanding how anyone could do that sort of thing. Well, let's just say I am a not-so-proud member of both clubs. Fortunately, Excalibur makes such a good bow that most find no damage done.
Keep smiling!

Well, I too just joined the club, however it was no fault of my own. My rope cocker failed on me when I was trying to de-cock it. I can only assume that the part that failed hit me in the chest because I have a nasty cut on my chest right now from the impact. Have an STS on my Exomax... enough force hit the STS that it moved the STSs alignment with the string. I see some small wear on the string as a result (a few strands frayed), but now without a rope cocker I can't cock it to do the cotton ball test as someone mentioned. Guess I'm calling Danny Miller....

Here's a picture of the broken piece.
