broken string

Post by digger_grant »

Yesterday i installed a new excalibur flemish string on my Exomax. Shot about 20 bolts, and then the string broke. Has anyone else had this problem? Any input?

Where exactly on the string did it break?

It broke at the loop near the fraying, only one of the twisted strings broke. It broke while being fired. Arrow was a bullseye, however the string cut open a thumb.

Sorry to hear that your string broke but I'm glad it was only your thumb and that the string didn't hit you in the face!

Flemish strings are hand made so the string bundles can be twisted a bit differently causing a bit more tension in one bundle. If that were the case and you shoot the bow directly after stringing it you could break the string at the serving or where tag ends protrude because that is where the greatest transitions occur. I personally think that any string should be installed and left overnight (or longer) before shooting unless they are put under tension on a jig for a while.

Should you wax the loops and tag ends on a flemish string before useing?
Or should i say, would it have helped?

I doubt it would have Rick.
I wonder if the shooter had a partial dry-fire? If the string came off of the limb it may have been. Normally a complete or partial dry-fire does not end up with a broken string which still leads me to believe that the string did not have a chance to "settle in" before shooting.

the string was left on the bow over night (24 hours), and was not dry fired
