Stock for my Phoenix

Post by Dereck »

Newguy was generous to give me a stock that he had started with the trough for the rail milled in it all ready. And the basic shape started.
Well it coming along and hope to have it completed before deer season. We'll see if that happens.
All the shaping has been done with an angle grinder and a Dremmel tool.
Should have taken a pic before I started but no foresight there.

I heated a piece of white plastic to the shape I wanted and then covered it in shrink wrap.It is held on by the bolt which I had to add and fits into a slot in the grip.

What would the disc look like for an angle grinder that can remove wood?
I have a nice maple stock here I want to do up, but I can not for the life of me figure out how to rapidly remove material.
Nice looking stock by the way. :D

I am just using a standard metal disc very fibrous surface.
The Dremmel piece is like a small belt for the tight areas.
If you need one let me know I think I have another one kicking around I can drop it off for you.

Well I put the black stain on a thin as possible and it still went blotchy on me so I tried to sand the heavy areas and this started to happen.
I like the look and will leave it this way. Will put several coats of linseed oil to keep the exposed wood in good shape.

Dereck, for woods like maple, pine, and birch that are softer use a wood conditioner before you stain it, it will almost always take care of any spots or blotchy areas

I believe this was ash pretty hard

I did not do the milling for the rail just the final shaping using a grinder and a dremmel

Newguy if you want me to make one get it milled out but no promises on time frame
I am not a carpenter so it will reflect that :|
