I made some of those back in my stupid days. Aluminum arrow shaft full of powder, drill out the insert a bit to fill a .22 starter pistol cap and stick it in the insert, and shoot it against something hard. In retrospect I'm very glad that 2213 was the largest size made at the time. We would probably not have survived with all our body parts intact if we had had some 2712s.

The theory here isn't much different then those that spear fish with a spear that has bullet tips (.22 cal). When you fire the spear in the water, at the moment of impact, the casing is forced back on a firing pin which, just like a gun, ignites the power and fires the bullet. Same thing could be done with a crossbow bolt although I wouldn't want to be behind the arrow when that thing went off, no telling how far back the arrow might come flying back at you.
