Another broadhead target question

Post by End of the road »

My local archery and gun club has a couple of really big blocks of white Styrofoam type stuff that are about 12 or so inches thick. They sort of look like something that was once used on the underside of a float dock. I have been using a target bag for field points but some of the members have been using the blocks with their vertical bows. I was wondering if it would be OK, or wise, to use the blocks as a target to sight in my broadheads. I could put one behind the other and get 24 + inches. I just picked up a couple compressed bales of peat moss but this would be so much easier than setting up something at home. Plus it has a good backstop already there. I’m shooting an Exocet 200 and will be using 125 gr Montecs on either Firebolts or 2219’s. I can’t bring myself to spend over a $100 on a commercial broadhead target I would not use that much. Any thoughts?

A decent broadhead target will last you many, many years. Don't know if Styrofoam works for crossbows but does not last very long and makes a mess. I had a cube made from Styrofoam when I was just shooting a compound and found it a real beast to remove arrows, especially with broadheads. No harm in trying it out.

So End of the road,

Have you shot a broadhead into the compressed peat moss yet? I am very curious about that. Might even switch from my bag of rags cuz I bet you could pull out yor arrow with peat moss.

Please share your experience.

Not yet. It has been raining pretty heavy here the past few days though should be clearing later today. I've read that the peat moss works well but you have to plug the holes in the bags with duct tape or similar. If it dries up I'll try to get out this afternoon and see how it works. I'll keep you all informed

I've yet to find a better target than the dirt backstop where we sight in rifles on the farm I hunt. It's rock-free "Adams County Topsoil" (clay) and doesn't damage heads other than dulling blades, which I expect from any target.

The peat moss sound interesting! Let us know it it works and I may just take more of an interest in my wife's gardening.

Foam block will work. I paid $30 for mine and it lasted me 5 seasons. Finally giving it up this summer. It does make a mess and the arrows are tough to pull out. I suggest not using the excalibur bolt remover tool that screws into your knock or you will just pull the insert out like I did. use a modified plier style tool made by Danny Miller and sold in canada by the bow shop in KW for $17 plus shipping. I will probably make my own foam block target next year and see how it goes. hope this helps.

***just thought of something***

I recommend your foam block be a couple inches less in thickness than the lenth of your arrows, if not you will certainly burry a bolt in the target and need to start diggin.
