2010 archery moose trip

Post by Petersen »

We decided to try something new this year...actually hunting moose with a tag in hand. We are usually forced to calf hunt near Wawa, because we never get picked. This year we put in much further north and got a bull tag for the archery season....at least we would have a chance this way. We headed up to the Pasha lake cabins near Beardmore Ontario. Its about 3 hours north east of Thunder Bay. A quick 15 hour drive from Brantford  . Upon arrival we were welcomed by a bright sunny day, and a swarm of black flies :? . While we waited for our cabin to be cleaned (we were early), we unloaded the ATVs and surveyed the area. I would not recommend trail riding after a 16hour car ride, and no sleep. About 20 min into the ride, my uncle mistook my excitement over our first grouse sighting as direction to pull off the road. He ended up in a 6' ditch with the quad on top of him. No injuries....unless you count bruised pride :D .
The resort is situated on the crystal clear waters of Pasha Lake, and the owners we nothing short of fantastic. Chad was very helpful, and made every effort to make sure our stay was perfect. The bird hunting was great, and with over 50 lakes to chose from, had some world class fishing as well. As for the moose hunting.....we saw some sign, but no encounters to speak of. With the increased traffic on the roads, the Moose had pushed back into the deep cover. We basically stuck to the water, got back into the bays and swamps, and called. Several groups, had moose under 30yards, but were unable to seal the deal. On Thursday, the guys in cabin 8 took a nice bull at 40 yards. :D Congrats to them! We met a lot of great guys, and had some opportunties to compare hunting stories with some of our friends south of the boarder.

Here are a few pics from the week...

This is where we called home for the week....a hunters paradise, warm clean, and just minutes from the action.

Uncle Mark trying to bring home dinner.....you'll notice in the second frame, the gun has just recoiled, and the ruffy, and high tailing it out of there. He said it was because he wasn't shooting his own gun????

Yes, the next 2 frames are of the same grouse...... unfortunately they are as tasty as they are beautiful. :o This guy was trying to intimidate a juvenile bird back under the pine bush. Grouse were so abundant this year, we had no trouble taking daily limits while we were there.

Some fishing pics.... a few whitefish, and some of the walleye we caught. The two fish on the right were blue walleye. A first for me!

The rack from the bull shot on Thursday...The boys had him cut and wrapped the next day, and back at it to fill their cow tag.

All in all a great time....lots of stories, and great memories made this week.
Next stop....dear season, can't wait to get in the stand next weekend!

Beauty pics. Looks like an awesome time! Good time to be had, even without the moose...grouse and walleye break the monotony of not seeing any moose, eh?

Congrats.

Great story and pictures! Looks like a nice place to spend a week.
Can't say I have ever heard of blue walleye though, very cool.

Some of my co-workers where up around Thunder Bay moose hunting with their crossbows for 2 weeks.
Only saw a cow with calf all the time there and weren't able to get a shot off.
Dang!! :(

I live in T.Bay, have stayed at Pasha Lake a few times and have hunted the area many times.
You have taken a few great pics, but may want to remove the ones of Uncle Mark with the grouse .... "No discharge of firearms from or
across the travelled portion of a
right-of-way" ... to quote the 2010-2011 Ontario Hunting Regs.
You have provided photo documentation of your uncle's offence.
A Conservation Officer might follow up on that.

Good looking country! I like the action shots. :D

Wish I were there . . .right now. :)

Hey Thunder .... Funny you mentioned it ! ( a PM to Petersen would have been more appropriate , rather than picking on his nice picture thread ) .

I PM'd Petersen on same .... Turns out they were told by the locals it was OK in that area .

From what I understand it was a logging road ... And they were following suit of other hunters that took grouse from that area daily .

( Of course , Nobody ever pops grouse along logging roads inThunderbay or surrounding areas )

If you go by the reg's , page 21 has note at the bottom .

NOTE: The restrictions above do not apply to an unmaintained right-of-way.

Trust me ... I know the Petersen group ... they would never knowingly commit any game infraction .
