New Boots - Getting rid of the Smell?

Post by CDN Taxman »

I picked up a pair of Coleman hunting boots yesterday at Canadian Tire. $ 140 on sale for $ 60!!!!!!

Took them out in the bush this morning and I could smell them....so the deer would be able to as well.

Any ideas other than use on how to get rid of that smell? The nice shiny new smell, not my feet!

What are the boots, rubber or another material?

Get them nice and dirty with natural odours that you find in the woods - earth, pine, cedar, decayed logs, mushrooms.

Not poo.

Rubber bottoms with a waterproof canvas type of material. This is the part that smells the most!

Likely it is the rubber curing at a rapid rate or it is the release agent from the mould. UV light, heat and Ozone accelerates the aging/curing process so best off leave them outside for a day or two. Some of the spay one agents like Scent Blocker prevents gasifying which is how the smell reaches your nose. You could also drag it behind your truck on the 401 for a couple of kms on a rope

I always take out my new boots and leave them on the porch for a week or so.. get them wet and let them break in. The box they come in keeps the new boot smell in there. They will air out some that way but not 100%

I wash with scent free soap. Then rub them with dirt, like your putting dry rub on baby back ribs:) Then let them sit outside, and your good to go.

I'd try some Scentbuster Dust.

I bought some of this stuff not knowing for sure what to expect but have been amazed with the results. Short story. We had a trash barrel my wife complained about it smelling so bad. I checked...and boy oh boy was she ever right! Okay, time to experiment. I just sprinkled some of this into the trash barrel, closed the lid (quickly) and let it set overnight. The next morning I opened it (slowly) and was amazed that the smell was gone!

I also had a pair of boots I had always had a problem getting rid of the smell so had not used them for hunting. So, I made a paste by mixing in some water and wiped it all over the boots and let them set. The first thing I noticed was my hands got all black. lol The second thing was that the bad smell was gone. Needless to say, I ordered more.

This fellow is a regular poster on Michigan Sportsman and seems to be a pretty nice guy. It was funny last year though when I ordered some, about a week later I got an envelop in the mail from him. It seems he had made a mistake somewhere and overcharged me something like .07 and refunded it. Shoot. I'd have never known.
