East Texas Crossbow Buck
I have been watching a couple of bucks since July via game camera, and I had a really close encounter with one of them this evening.
I got in one of my climbing stands this afternoon, and I was only there about an hour when I heard movement from behind me. It was moving slowly through the brush, and coming in from that direction, I really thought it was a hog. When it moved into view, I could see it was limping badly and knew immediately that it was the big 7 point that I noticed a couple of weeks ago had a hurt left front foot. He was moving cautiously through the brush, and I decided that even though his rack wasn't huge that I would take the conservationist approach and end his suffering. When he moved into the clearing, he was only about 10 yards away from the tree I was in, but I was 35 feet above him. The shot was high in his right shoulder and exited low in his left shoulder, and he took off running back into the brush the way he came. I was able to watch him run in a big semicircle and collapse no more than 30 yards from where he was hit.
I am not sure what happened to his crippled foot, but I think it might have resulted from a snake bite. I weighed the buck before skinning, and he was 175 pounds which ties for the largest body weight that has ever been recorded on our place since we started keeping records in 1994.

Very nice buck...just out of curiosity if it was a snakebite would that mean you would not be able to eat the meat?

Very nice buck you collected.

When I cleaned the deer, the meat looked and smelled fine, and I am sure cooking will eliminate any toxins that might happen to be present.hockeyfodder wrote:Very nice buck...just out of curiosity if it was a snakebite would that mean you would not be able to eat the meat?

That's a nice one! Where bouts in E Texas are you hunting?
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. Gen 27:3-4

Re: East Texas Crossbow Buck
Congrats on that gorgeous looking buck. I am also glad to call you a fellow hunter because you chose to harvest this animal due to his apparent injury. My wife and I had a 3-legged doe in our back yard a couple of months back. The doe was missing her left rear leg below the tarsal gland. The injury was healed over so it probably happened in the previous season. She wasn't too big but if I see her this fall I will definitely try to put her down.

It's a small, small world!
