if deer could fly we would be doing really well

Post by coreybaker10 »

hey everyone...start of by saying sorry about the lengthiness.. As usual its been the wrong wind for most of my favorite deer stands so far this season.. because of that the ducks and geese have had to take the punishment so far this year.. every year I like to get a group of us together over the thanksgiving weekend to shoot some birds.. its been a tradition for the last 5 years so i cant break it now.. This year found us in a cut corn field with 6 shooters and 1 camera man and it turned out to be one of the best thanksgiving shoots we have had..
weather was perfect.. cool wind out of the west

the blinds were brushed( thank you amber) and 9 dzn decoys were precisely laid

the first to fall for the day were a pair of wood ducks.

after the few flights of ducks the geese began to pour into the field. it was one of those days where every flock comes in on a string.

it was perfect. over cast skies. good friends, family and lots of laughs.
then this began......
Image
Image
we ended up the morning hunt with 27 geese and 7 ducks...
Image
oh and the really nice thing was we ended up getting 11 banded geese .... i like that ratio...

thanks everyone and i hope all of you had wonderful thanksgivings. cause thats what the holidays are all about. FRIENDS,FAMILY AND GOOD TIMES

Very nice indeed.
Looks like a real nice way to spend time on Thanksgiving. :)

Very nice photos!! Sounds like a good hunt. Could you explain the banned ones? :D :D

The bands are used to track a goose or duck . They (wildlife service ) know where and when the bird was banded . Then when you phone it in and say the approximate location . They know if it is a bird that flies some distance or a local bird . They also have neck bands for birds like geese from the James Bay area .

What a fantastic hunt you had there! Some good shooting, some nice birds, bonus bands but mainly you spent it with your good frinds and family... That sir is Priceless!

Congrats.

Nothing like a good goose shoot!
Can you let us know what the bands tell you? Years ago I was picked to sumbit samples of a wing to Ottawa. They would send back info about species, age etc.

The geese are late moving south this year, lots of crops still out in the fields and warm weather.
