Last year I shot 78 coyotes, 2 were with a bow, both were sheer luck. Just happened to be in the right spot at the right time, first was with a recurve calling coyotes, second was with the crossbow while turkey hunting. Coyote hunting is very challenging, even more so when you set out to do it with a bow, it can be done though.

Bow shop here in town is having a primos guy come in to do a calling seminar in Jan, and it sounds like it would be something interesting to get into, but I am wondering how hard it is to get one into bow range...

i believe the only WMU's you need a tag for are around algonquin park and they started this to protect the wolves or something along those lines. i could understand wolf tags, but who in their right mind is going to buy a tag to shoot a yote? i wonder how many tags they have sold so far

id say this is one of the rare cases where common sense trumps the law....SSS

as for bow hunting yotes...dont put away your tree stand after deer season is over

I usually only see 1 or 2 Coyotes a year while bow hunting whitetails. But on last weeks controlled hunt I saw 9. My group is now setting up some coyote drives for december. Cant wait! :D

78 coyotes!! That's just so awesome Pyd!!

The coyote/wolf tag was instituted to protect the so-called red wolf of Algonquin Park. It has been proven by DNA testing that the wolves in and around the park are the same as the rest of the wolves (eastern gray wolves) in eastern North America. The MNR's own wolf specialists readily admits there is no distinct subspecies of wolf. In spite of this evidence the MNR refuses to lift the wolf hunting regulations around the park and you have to buy a tag to hunt wolves or coyotes at $9.25 a tag with a two tag limit. The regulated area includes WMU 56 as the southern limit.
It makes no sense to continue the tag system other than to add a few dollars to the MNR's coffers. Like the spring bear hunt, I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for common sense to kick in and guide the people in Queen's Park who pull the strings actually change things to reflect sound wildlife management practices as opposed to regulating according to politics.
It would be interesting to know how many people actually buy tags.

With the problem some areas up here have with 'yotes I find it hard to believe this to be true. Another avenue is trapping. You get your license and you can shoot and use the fur if in good shape and make a few dollars at it.

Pyd I would love to have more info on that date ,place and time for the workshop.

Hey wheelie,

If what you heard is true it's a darn shame. The deer hunter's survey I just received in the mail asked specifically about how many times I saw coyotes during my hunt this year. Unfortunately for me, this year I've seen more coyotes than deer! In my neck of the woods, I see coyotes roaming in packs of 5-9, and deer in singles, nature is sure not in balance on my farm.

I know, have hunted coyotes for years. Never in 20 years have I seen them during the day time. Now I see them standing beside highway in the middle of the day waiting to cross alot. They are becoming bolder these days. Think they are half domestic dog now. Would be a shame, but can see goverment doing it to make more money. Would be hard to enforce. Got my plan if they do. Can't see guys that hunt them with packs of hounds very happy if they change it.

Coyotes and dogs can indeed interbreed. The first generation offspring are called "coy-dogs" and can be huge. The Illinois State Museum had one on display that was a roadkill and it weighed 80 lbs. live weight, which is nearly wolf size. The coyote genetics are very strong, however, and within another generation or two any sign of domestic dog disappears completely. I've killed 2 or 3 coyotes a year for the past 16yrs. and have never seen one that appeared to have any dog genetics. Interbreeding must not be too common. Gary
