Ontario records to aim at:

The only whitetail world record taken in Ontario is in the weight category.
According to NAHC, “This buck fell to bowhunter John Annett of Ontario,
Canada, in 1977. It dressed out at 431 pounds on government certified
scales.” (living the Hunt p. 151) Thus the live weight would have been in the 500 pound range!

The largest typical Whitetail deer was poached. It was shot a half-hour
after legal light near Dryden, Ontario in November of 2003. This Massive
18 point buck had a net green score of 199 1/8". It’s final score after the
60 day drying period was 192 7/8" using the Boone & Crockett method. (Ontario Out of Doors, May, 2005)

The largest typical whitetail (legally taken) in this case with a rifle, was shot in South Western Ontario in 2009 and had a gross score of 198 4/8". It’s final net score was 190 1/8". (Ontario Monster Whitetails, Vol 5, No 4 Fall issue, p. 34)

The largest typical whitetail in the crossbow category was shot December 15 of 2003 near Fort Erie, Ontario. The rack totalled 182 6/8" inches. “It was a 200 class deer” said Randy Robins, “but we had to deduct 18 points.” (Ontario Out of
Doors, April 2004, p.6)

It is interesting to note that three of these deer were shot in Southern Ontario and are a different sub-species than the larger sub-species found in North Western Ontario, the Western provinces and some northern American states. Saskatchewan can still boast the world’s largest typical whitetail. I refer, of course, to the Hansen buck that scored 213 5/8". (Outdoor Canada, Summer 2006, p. 91)

Until recently, Ontario has never been a trophy whitetail destination. Maybe
we should keep these deer a secret!

a 500lb whitetail? even though it was weighed on a "government certified scale", i wont believe it until i see some pics. that deer would have been 200lbs heavier than a big bodied buck and 3x heavier than your average doe.

probably someones pet that got fed non stop and was penned up

Just for the record there is a report of a 512 pound whitetail deer killed in Minnesota in 1926. (somewhere I remember reading that it was actually found dead. (for a reference see Whitetails: Phantoms of the forest, Minnesota, Northwood press, 1996, p. 24)
The Author, Michael Furtman, on the same page also states that the largest deer (weight wise) "seem to come from the boreal whitetail subspecies." This is the species that occupies most of Ontario. I don't know if, or how much, the big bodied dakota subspecies overlaps with the boreal in North Western Ontario. So I stand to be corrected on the Dryden buck. I presumed it might have been a dakota whitetail.

This tendency, according,to Furtman, for Northern deer to be larger than southern deer is known as "Bergmann's rule" Basically this means that "large bodies more efficiently retain body heat because of the ratio of internal volume to external surface area. They simply lose heat at a slower rate." p. 24

Not worth hunting in Ontario, eh?

I guess we'll just keep brutes like these to ourselves...

Hey Dirty Gun, is that a picture you took yourself, or is that one of that deer someone posted about on here a long time ago named "Big Bux"?

I love that picture!

No that is not Big Bux!

In fact, Big Bux was just shot on December 6th or 7th.....somewhere around there.

For those of you who don't know......

Big Bux is a glorious deer who consistently showed up in the back yard of a professional photography for seven years. He was huge the first year (estimated 20 points) and was probably about three and half years old then. So, the deer was probably 10 years old and still truly magnificant.

This year, they extended the season by two weeks and he was finally harvested. I have some pictures of this year as well as many others and will post some of them later on!

A great trophy, but seeing him alive was almost as good as seeing him on your wall!

As in this year?

I followed those pictures for a while through the link that was posted here, but that was quite a while ago! I would have thought he was long dead!
