bucks dropping racks in S Ontario?

Post by bullfood »

I'm heading out for the last time tomorrow afternoon. Our neighbour took a nice 10 pt last night and saw another buck which had already dropped its rack. Anyone else seeing bucks without racks in S Ontario? We're about 1 1/2 hrs N of Oshawa.

Hi, I live in in South Ontario too, near Mount Forest and I shot my first buck on December 27th and it too had already shed its horns and I know another group who shot a buck nearby and same thing - horns are all gone. It was kind of disappointing for my first buck (thought I just shot a doe - quite surprised it was a buck). Oh well, there is always next year!

Welcome to the forum CindyinAyton!
In early November I took what I thought was a doe. It was a buck with both antlers Broken off. A week before my buddy took a buck with 1 antler broken off. I saw atleast two other bucks sporting a unicorn look. Bucks in my area are scrappers! I have found a shed antler already, and a thick one at that! Never saw the deer though......

High and Welcome Cindy, This is something that alot do and don't realize until after. You just learned something and you didn't make a huge mistake, but next time when a deer comes in you can look between the ears and if you notice it has long hair and dark then look for the antler hole.

Just my personal preferance but I pass on any buck that has shed and check it out well before I decide as they are the deer i'll be loooking for next season.

Congrats on your first deer, would love to see a pic and bring this up can help others that late season it is not uncommon for bucks to be anterless and some years or worst then others...

Was out for a good long walk in the thick stuff on sat and sun hoping to find a dead buck. Didn't see any sheds or live bucks, and all I found was a dead doe.
