Dear all,
First a big thanks to all who have given advice to me since joining. Excal people are just so helpful and friendly. I’m overseas in a country without proshops so I rely 100% on people like you for advice. I cannot just chat with other people in shops or at ranges and get lots of problems solved in one conversation. So, thank you all!
I have decided more or less on the G5 Montec as a standard issue BH for my two Excals (Vortex & Vixen), as well as an interchangeable BH for my vertical compound bow (75lb). I keep reading people referring to “brass inserts” to get the FOC weight up. What are these brass inserts? Forgive my ignorance. How do they attach to the arrow? I would prefer the 100 g Montec (seems more “industry standard”-standardizing my gear is VERY important to me, since getting stuff into country here can be problematic sometimes). If I go for the 100g what weight insert should I get? Or does it all hang on the arrow I choose?
Thanks again to all in advance.
Regards,
Tony Banks

Re: Inserts?
Regardless of use of carbon or alum arrow, the part that your points or bheads screw into is the insert. I only have weights for GT Lazer II carbons. Alum weighs 32 gr and brass 110 gr. I've heard of 90 gr brass for them but have never seen them.
FOC seems to be more in play w/ fixed blade bheads than w/ field points or mechanical bheads. If you have alum inserts and want more FOC, you can go to a much heavier point than 100 gr. The Excal Boltcutter bhead is 150 gr and has matching weight field points available, and there is a 175 gr Slick Trick now.
I shoot brass inserts and 100 gr bheads. [Slicks] I'm of the opinion that much over 125 gr w/ brass inserts is into the realm of diminishing returns, but YMMV.
I'd put together a file on this I'm pming you.

Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.

Re: Inserts?
Inserts are the items that are "inserted", usually into the frontend of an arrow blank. They can also be uses in the backend as nocks with crossbows using flat nocks.
Here's a link to what they look like.

Re: Inserts?
They can be used as nocks but doing so puts twice as much weight to back of arrow; which is counter productive to increasing FOC.ComfyBear wrote:Inserts are the items that are "inserted", usually into the frontend of an arrow blank. Re: Inserts?
If you shoot the 150 gr boltcutters or the 175 grain slicktricks you should not need brass inserts you can try the g5 with out brass and see if you are getting good groups if you are great if not they can be bought latter.

Re: Inserts?
I haven't shot the G5 but I plan on trying it. IMHO with a 100 gr BH using carbon arrows you will need to add some forward weight. No experience with them, but the Gold Tip Lazer 11 comes with a 110 gr brass insert. Sounds like they would be worth trying. Maybe someone that has tried this setup will chime in.
