Apparently Mike found a piece of wood with a really nice stock in it. All he's doing is cutting away the scrap wood, how tough can that be?
I found a log with some firewood inside it once, wasn't difficult at all to hack it out,

seriously, this is one of the coolest processes I've had the privilege to watch, my hat is off to you Mike,
cheers,
David

This is one step in the process that I want to post again. Its helped me keep track of center after the blank loses its edges. It has proven to be (othet than blood letting) one of the better idea's that came out of stock making for me. First pic show using a flexible metal banding strip I can lay the strip down on a curved surface, line up the holes and draw a line dead center.Image

Here it is after the line is drawn and the holes running down the center. Of course all this is mute if you don't drill the holes straight into the wood.Image

I vote that this thread nevers ends! Sorry Boo  Mike part of the deal should be that Don has to personally show this piece of art to everybody on this forum    How much heavier do you think this will make a Xbow? Mike, you might be mass producing these pieces of wood with stocks in them.

Hello Mike,
How do you know that won't warp or twist? Is it the type of woo you use?
What a wonderful talent you have. It looks so good.
Thanks,
Raymond

Raymond;
Can't guarantee it won't warp, but you make sure the moisture content is good before you start. For black walnut it seems to be 12%. I also control the humidity or at this time of the year the dry air in the shop. I am going to build a kiln so I can keep a better control on the wood moisture content. Maple is the most unstable black wanut is very stable and laminates are the best. I'd say warp free. Thanks for asking. Aging :)

The stock Mike made for me weighed about the same as the factory plastic. Walnut is fairly lite wood. I didn't have a scale, but, I made a rough balance scale and they did just that . . .the walnut was ever so slightly heavier.

I can't tell any difference by handling it. Walnut is a great choice for a stock.

Looking good Mike. :D

Although I don't have one, I've always loved the look of a wooden crossbow stock. Seeing these updates on Mikes project makes you appreciate the amount of work that goes into getting it right. Nice work mate.

Warping can and will happen by the stock swelling from absorbing too much moisture. It is imperative to insure that the wood is sealed extremely well to prevent it absorbing moisture. Mike does that very well when he finishes the stock.

It is also important to store the bow in a low humidity area, as well as an area that is not overly hot as the wood can also lose moisture.

The stock will not twist unless it is put in extreme conditions like, soaking in a kake for a week or leaving in lay in the sun at 100° for a couple weeks. Any twist in the wood would be there from when it was growing as a tree.

I'm doing a lot of shaping, keeping track of the centering holes and taking off weight anytime I can.Image

I like to exagerate the thumb-hole so you can slid your hand into the grip. Just my taste. Image

Oh Don, there is a lot of shaping left yet. And, then I can start sanding from 50 grit all the way to 320 grit. And lastly the finishing which is a drawn out process. There is nothing fast about making a custom stock. Thats the huge difference between a CNC punched out stock and one made just for YOU. :)
