Varizone or Lumizone
New member here, from NY. I plan on buying the Vortex to hunt NJ, PA, and NY. My biggest dilemma is what scope to get. The Vortex Varizone Package from Cabela's is a good deal. I have found a few places that sell the same package but with the Lumizone Scope for a few bucks extra. So my question is Varizone or Lumizone? and why? I will be usuing this crossbow for Whitetail Deer here in the Northeast.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Varizone or Lumizone
Much debated topic . . .I like the view and clarity of the lumizone best. I have both. The extra weight isn't noticed. I don't use the lighted recticles much . . .still a nice feature.
I'd rather wear out than rust out.

Re: Varizone or Lumizone
I just bought a new package and opted for the Lumizone. It has all the features of the Vari-Zone plus the illuminated reticle. My thinking was for the extra few dollars, being able to focus on a black bear at dusk was worth it.

Re: Varizone or Lumizone
I have read somewhere about there being issues with the lumizone or something? are the issues fixed? My thinking of getting the lumizone is that I hunt in heavy woods, and take a lot of deer just as it gets light...the lighted reticles could be a plus?

Re: Varizone or Lumizone
The lumi recticles will offer a slight advantage. I have not put a battery in mine since it burned out about a year ago. I find the light gathering ability is very good on the lumizone.
The lighted recticle is only good to a certain degree of light or brightness(depends on the time of day) . . .after a certain brightness, it's hard to see the target for the light. It's not night vision, nor anywhere close.
The lumizone is good for an extra 10 minutes of hunting when compared to the varizone, without the lighted recticle. That's why I perfer it.
It might be worth checking out the new line of scopes too.
As far as the issues . . .there was a higher % of rejects when they first came out. The number was still very small. The issues are solved, from what I hear, but, that doesn't matter to me . . .I know Excalibur will stand behind their product, in a big way.
Buy will confidence.

Re: Varizone or Lumizone
I've got the VariZone and am very happy with this particular scope. Really enjoy it for 3D and target practice but it is more than I need for hunting whitetail (PA & CT). The peep sight that comes with the bow or maybe a single dot red dot scope would, in my opinion, work just fine.

Re: Varizone or Lumizone
I have owned both and both are good scopes. If your hunting in the thick stuff then a illuminated recticle will come in handy. Hunting in the wide open like a feild edge it wont be an issue.

Lumizone. Larger field of view, lighted reticule. The Varizone will do, the Lumi will do just a bit better, esp early and late.
Vortex, Phoenix, single-shot rifles and handguns.

I like my Lumizone except I keep forgetting to turn off the lighted crosshairs and my battery runs down. Gary
Re: Varizone or Lumizone
I've owned several Vari-zones and a couple of Lumizones over the years. They all worked great, my only complaint was the fact the in early mornings with dew , I've had to them "steam-up" on the outside of both lens, and would have to wipe them with a soft cloth. Nonetheless, I still own them and have them on two Lumizones on two of my Excalibur (Exomag & Exocet) crossbows.
On my third Excalibur (Exomax) I have a Hawke SR IR scope.

Although it is smaller than both Excaliburs scopes, I find the optics very clear and that "steaming up" is not an issue. Also, being a fixed power scope I've found it very dependable and problem free.
You can also look into the "new" Excalibur scopes, i.e. Shadow-Zone and Twilght DLX.
Just a few options for you to look into.

Re: Varizone or Lumizone
all the packages for sale online are with the varizone. Anybody know a site that sells the Vortex package with the lumizone???
