Blacktail in Western Canada

Post by End of the road »

After I got my first ever kill last season and posted up a photo some of you said that you had never seen a black tail. This big boy wandered by the other day and I was able to get a good photo. I thought I would post it up for those that have never seen one or would like another look. What caught my eye was the size of the antlers this early in June.

That is a first for me. What is the weight of a good size Black Tail Buck and how about a Black Tail Doe? In the picture the deer looks to be short and chunky. Am I correct in saying that compared to White Tail Deer? How much do you think that deer weighs? How old do you think that deer is? Thanks for showing us the picture.

Great picture, It does look a bit chunky around the mid section.
I'm not racist. Black or white would suit me on the Barbeque

Must have a full paunch but can count the ribs. Nice looking deer. I like the coloring.

Hankenhunter is probably right that this guy is about 135 pounds. I would expect he might put on another 15 or so by the season. Boned out, which is how I process them, big boys can get you about 65 - 70 pounds of meat. Does here run about 2/3 the size. Black tails are considered ghosts by many as often all you can tell they were there is the distant sound of them running off. I would figure this guy to be at least 3 years old. Yearlings and two year olds are much smaller.

I'm hoping I can keep track of him and post him up again during the season.

I live in Ontario, but the first deer I harvested was a black-tail. That was on my first ever deer hunt, in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, back in 1980.

So that pic brings back pleasant memories.

Thanks.
