dog start hunting

Post by xulesaa »

At what age can my dog start hunting upland birds? I have a 3 month old English Springer Spaniel pup. I would like him to be my bird dog someday. At what age can he actually hunt, and when should I start training him on hunting tasks? I do not really have much bird hunting experience myself. I hunt big game but have always wanted to bird hunt. I just don't have anyone to do it with, so I got my own partner!

its been along time since i owned bird dogs but the training starts now!teach him commands take him in the woods for walks let him learn as you do.the worst misstake i ever maid was buying pen raised quail and setting them out.for my pup to point the birds would not fly and the pup caught one bird and i damn near ruined her for life!the more time in the woods you spend the better she will be.how far to work from you.and things like that.spend alot of time with that dog and you will both learn to work together.the way i broke my dogs from going to far was when they did i would hide on them and they would have to find me.do that a couple of times and watch your dog she will be keeping an eye on you to!never needed a shock collar!good luck with your pup.

Consider contacting one of the many Springer training clubs. If you need help fining one in Canada or the US send me a PM.
I don't thing a pup is too young to start them. Check out Springvillespringers.com
Some people just like stepping on rakes
