bugs wrote:I cannot comment with expertise since I have never shot anything with my CB yet other than my 3-D deer. I know many people use mechanical but what is the advantage? I would worry it would not open correctly.

The advantage is that most good quality mechanicals will shoot very accurately and to the same POI as field points with little or no "tuning" of the arrow/broadhead combination. Several brands also offer a much larger cutting diameter than is available with fixed blades.

I have killed several deer with mechanicals, but I did finally have one fail to open. I did kill the deer (heart shot) and it went down quickly, but it was the only time I ever intentionally made a heart shot (perfect range, shot angle, and shooting conditions). Lucky that time, I guess.
Another disadvantage of mechanicals is the possibility of opening in flight (actually on "launch" with a crossbow) and flying wildly off course. I had that happen with a couple brands I tested, but it happened while I was target shooting - not hunting.

I'm seriously thinking of trying another brand of mechanical this year. I have recently tested Trophy Ridge Sidewinders from my Phoenix and have experienced no problems so far. I'll do a little more shooting with the ones I've already dulled the blades on, and if they continue to shoot accurately I may buy new blades and give them a try on a deer.

I previously used 125 Slick Tricks. They were fine, but I switched to Striker Magnums. (Bigger cut)
