Michigan Early Season Doe!!!
I made it out to the woods yesterday afternoon but my only visitor was a lil' button buck. Talk about young and dumb, this guy walked the woods like he didn't have a care in the world. He stopped to munch on some fallen apples from a nearby tree, then up the trail to the clearing that I hunt. He walked right past the corn I put out and went for the acorns all over the ground that were underneath the oak that I was camped in. He finally went back to the corn for only a couple of minutes before he bored of that and wandered off for the evening.
Tonight turned out to be a repeat of yesterday. Mr. Buttons wandered back to his personal supermarket near my stand. Well why not, he was getting fruit, nuts, and whole grains. Tonight I decided to "play" with him a little. First it was snapping my fingers every now and then...no response. Second, I would "tink" my wedding ring against the aluminum rail on my Vortex, still nothing. So I decided to take a few pictures of him with my cell phone. He finally left after another 45 minute chowfest. That was around 6:30pm. Well about 30 minutes later I saw movement coming down the same path where the button came from originally. I looked expecting to see that button come striding out from the brush. Nope, doe #1 takes the stage by my corn. Soon I saw more movement coming, doe's #2 and #3 arrived. Now I had the dilemma of deciding which one was the biggest to shoot.
I made my choice and let my arrow fly the short 15 yards to it's target. She dropped where she stood but it became apparent that it wasn't a kill shot. My arrow went high through her left shoulder and the tail end of the shaft lodged between 2 of the vertebrae above her shoulder. She floundered around for several minutes so I recocked my vortex and put a finishing shot through her.(I hate to see an animal suffer).
I came down out of my stand and called my dad (I was hunting on his property). He came out to help me gut the doe before it got too dark. When I finished with the dirty work he helped me drag it out of the woods and load it into my pickup. Once I got her home and hung up in my garage I was able to cut the tenderloins out, those will be great on the grill tomorrow.
This last section is where I want to say my thanks to everyone that was with me when I made my kill tonight:
Excalibur-for making the best crossbow in the world, bar none.
Groundpounder-for that awesome top mount quiver.
Boo-for the awesome string that you made for my bow(its a beautiful thing)
Laura-for pushing the rights of crossbow hunting in Michigan
DaGriz-for making me that incredible knife that I used to clean her with.
My Dad for taking the time to assist me with gutting and dragging, saved me a lot of work that would've been done after dark.
AND....For ALL you forum members that have contributed your comments which have contributed to the quality and enjoyment of my crossbow hunts, THANKS A MILLION AND THEN SOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Michigan Early Season Doe!!!
congrats! looks like some good eating! i have been out also but have seen only 2 and was too dark for shooting. i do not see where the deer are plentiful enough to really to warrant a early and late season.strider23 wrote:I made it out to the woods yesterday afternoon but my only visitor was a lil' button buck. Good looking doe strider. Way to go!

I second what wabi said, that is one BIG doe! What is amazing is the others had to be close to its size for you to have to pick and choose.
