Nice job! Congrats! You gotta love those Spitfires. I know the sound you're talking about as the bolt passes through....it's the sound of success. Thanks for sharing with us. Very nice buck!

Thats a great buck. Don't take this personal but when you said it's alot easier i twing. I've hunted with recurves and compounds for 40 years and when I took up a crossbow hunting is hunting i noticed the vertical guys who slam us love to hear the "it was easier" stuff. I'm in my second year of crossbow hunting and have not taken a shot yet. I've seen a ton of deer and could have filled a couple tags. With that said thats a great buck and believe me I would have taken that shot. Sweet :D

That's a nice Buck! And to have taken him on Public Land makes him an even bigger Trophy! Way to go!
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. Gen 27:3-4

The key to hunting on public land is remote access. Four wheelers are not allowed where I hunt (nor is baiting) so the first thing I did was try to access the areas by road to determine where people could access by walking. I wanted to eliminate those areas. The other areas that were left required access by boat (which is a lot of trouble in the middle of the night) but well worth the extra effort.

The next challenge was to find deer in the new area. I used squirrel season for that. In the absence of crop fields, I figured acorns were the best chance to find deer. Squirrels also eat acorns, in fact I had jumped a deer in an area and immediately killed two squirrels and noticed they were eating acorns. After examining the area further, deer droppings were present, then it was just a matter of finding an ambush point at the convergence of to funnels. During my squirrel hunts, I had identified five places to hunt for deer. And by the way, the squirrels were plentiful and I have enjoyed eating them (still have one package in the freezer). By the way, I took the buck to a meat processor to have it butchered. The tenderloins and backstraps will be packaged and the rest will be ground up with beef fat added. Cost for processing is $95.
