Hunting in the snow

Post by Broadside »

This is a short video I took with my cell phone on December 10, 2011. I was in a stand overlooking a clearing. I saw no deer. My old man was tucked away in the woods. He saw four deer. It seems that the deer prefer to stay beneath trees and out of the snow if they have a choice.

Has anyone had luck hunting during a snowfall?

Man, it was coming down! We usually don't get much if any snow down here in KY while the season is still open. I've always wanted to shoot one in the snow and blood trail it, but never have had the opportunity. :( The one time I did hunt in the snow, I spined a big doe from her trying to duck the arrow. No blood trailing. :(

That's great!! Love hunting in the snow.

Easy to scout, easy to track, and you always know which way the wind is whistling!

Once the rut is over the deer want to fatten up before real winter sets in.

I arrowed this buck about 5 years ago just sitting against a tree in the falling snow. Before long you have instant snow-camo on.

Maple - nice buck! Instant snow-camo, eh? Makes sense.

A couple years ago my trail camera took a picture of a buck with 2 or 3 inches of snow piled up on its back. It either bedded down flat on its stomach and didn't shake the snow when it got up, or it had been moving around pretty slowly for a long time in falling snow. It was a little strange to see.

I really like hunting in the snow. Last year at this time we had snow but so far this year only mild temps, rain and mud everywhere....and I mean everywhere!

We had some snow stay on the ground for a about four days, but we've had rain the last couple days and it's gone now.
