I had a couple of free hours this morning before family obligations kicked in so I thought I go out and do a quick coyote hunt. I got set up at first light… I waited for things to settle down and for it to lighten up more. It was a very overcast morning with just a slight wind coming from my right to left. I placed my ecaller about 40 yds in front of me and to the right. I started off with some hand calling….The dying rabbit sound travelled quite a bit through the morning still air. I called for about a minute and went silent…. I alternated between my hand calls and ecaller, calling off and on for about 10 minutes before I see something really light coloured coming up the edge of the corn/bean field from the bush. I reposition my shooting sticks, lose sight of him for a minute and then he pops up about 75 yds away. He is facing the direction of the caller giving me a good body shot. I go squeeze the trigger….nothing safety on, dam it…this caused me to panic a bit, pop off the safety coyote starts coming toward me I wolf him to stop, he keeps coming I wolf him again he stops facing me and I put the cross hairs on him and fire… I see him spinning in the scope… I notice another coyote running away across the corn field, I stand up and yell out wolf, wolf, he doesn’t stop. I say to myself, bullet goes where crosshairs are….so I try the best I can and put them on the coyote and pull the trigger, I notice the coyote flinches and looks hit. I aim again and bang, he makes it to the bush….My heart is racing like crazy…my first double I called in this season…wow…. After a couple minutes I walk over to the first coyote (60 yds away) I can’t find him… See some hair, little blood but can’t find him……Thinking back, I may have rushed the shot……I do the grid search for 30 mins, it begins raining, freezing rain kind of thing and decide to go over to the second coyote I shot at… Not hoping for much as it was a good 125 yds off hand shot at a running coyote… I was hoping but thinking not likely. With no snow I could not find the impact area so I started a grid search and by the time I reached the bush, there he was just a few yards in….I plan if the weather lets up to go back and look for the other guy as he may be down in the field too….Enjoy the pics….
