How do you pin down your dog-house blind?

Post by ninepointer »

Despite my attempts at using progressively larger tent pegs to hold down my Ameristep Doghouse blind (the pegs that came with it were useless), my blind has been picked up and blown away by the winds the last two seasons in a row.

What methods do you folks use to keep your pop-up blinds from ending up in the Land of Oz?

Are you on frozen ground? Rocks?
How long is it in one place?
Mine is on pub. land - 3 to 5 hrs. then moved off.

Sorry, should have said it sits on private land for the entire duration of the deer season.

Are you sure if other people aren't knocking it over?

Use at least two of the screw in dog anchors if you are having that much trouble.

I went to a heavier tent peg and was okay as long as I pounded it in at a 45 degree angle away from the blind.

We also tie a tether rope from the blind to a tree so if the stakes do let go it's not going far.

I use those large blaze orange tent pegs from Princess Auto. I think they're around 12" long.

The Large screw In style holds mine down in the roughest winds, but just in case it's tethered to the nearest tree as well.

I leave some windows open as well so the wind doesn't have a large surface area to catch.

If you really need, most pet stores sell a screw in peg, to hold pets (dogs) leashed, they would be an excellent solution.

I prefer to use a longer peg - but nothing too huge. I'd rather it blow loose than rip!!! I do however tie mine to a tree or fence at at least one point, often two. I try for one higher tie, one lower.

Like Neil, I also keep the windows open a fair bit so that the wind can blow through it... and so it doesn't look much different when I'm in it. :)

I built a base out of 2x6's and two layers of OSB and painted it. Then I cut carpet for inside. I use 2" galv screws with plywood washers in the loops for the stakes. She may tear up but she aint gonna blow away! I tie the tie down cords to trees or brush nearby. It makes it stout, a nice level floor, and so far no snakes! I assure you me and a snake in a doghouse would win Americas Funniest Home Video contest.

I use the plastic 10 inch tent pegs and bang them in with a hammer. I havent had my blind blow anywhere since.

These are the ones I use. You need a BFH (mechanic's term  ) to drive them.
