Stock ?

Post by taz3 »

If i undo the 2 allen screws on the underside of the stock, will it simply come off or do I need to be concerned with anything else to remove it?

It a Phoenix, if it matters.

Yup, remove the two screws but be carefull because the stock is usually tight. Take it off evenly or you may bend the trigger stem.

No, I was just wondering about adding some safety guards and needed to see what was involved with the stock.

Oh Ya!!
I was made aware of this when I first received my crossbow, but had no idea how common it happens. I have a few ideas already, but never realized the seriousness of the potential injuries, I'm going to get going on it.

I spoke with the Peter at Xcal and he's all for it too, they haven't been able to resolve the problem either 100%. I might have an advantage, being new to the sport, allowing me to think further outside the box, even if it's wrong, it may lead to something better.

Thanks for the encouragement, it's tricky to say the least. I've been at the drawing board for a the past few days, seems now that push has come to shove, much more as surfaced, of what can or cannot be done. Some of the issues I'm dealing with, are trying to keep it simple, keeping it cost affective, not disrupting the esthetics any more then absolutely necessary, being able to fit new models as well as previous models and lastly, it has to be able to accept agingcrossbower's custom stock! :D

It has to, without question, safely protect us from accidental injury. I've been around heavy machinery most of my life and seen one too many injuries, because attention was diverted for a split second. If I can help one person, it will be well worth the effort.

I have an idea for a custom stock on the back burner, so it must be able to accommodate the custom stock too!!

What about this.

A folding grip very similar to the existing grip behind the trigger but in that it would drop down and keep the forward hand in a similar position to the rearward hand and hence safely below the rail.......

Actually the simplest idea, so far would be to electrically charge on the rail!

taz,

One thought that comes to mind would be to do two pairs of IR led's and phototransistors. Like the ones I used in this post.

http://www.excaliburcrossbow.com/phpBB2 ... 40#p201040

They act similar to the garage door switches that keep the door from closing if the beam is broken.
Place them along the sides of the rail just under where the string travels. This should be fairly unobtrusive and handle sensing if someone has their fingers in the path of the string. The next thing to figure out is what to do with that signal to alert the user they are about to rearrange their anatomy. Blinking warning light, buzzer, or maybe a solenoid to engage the safety.

One thought that I had to improve accuracy a bit was to add a U channel to each side of the rail that the cocking hooks would just be able to slide along, which should make it much more consistent when drawing back the string. I have seen several posts where people were having accuracy issues that were tied back to the cocking hooks not being tight against the rail when pulling the string back. It might be possible to find a mechanical solution that would prevent finger injuries and at the same time add to consistently cocking the bow.

Just a few thoughts, and keep up the tinkering.
Let me know if you would like to pursue the electrical solution a bit more.
