Boo strings . . .review

Post by sumner4991 »

Here are the strings Boo/Don wanted me to review.

I'll allow Don give you any details about the materials used. I think it's best for the testing if I don't get too involved with the material. I just like to focus on the shooting performance of the string itself.

String #1 . . .Black and Blue

String #2 . . .Tan and Green

I've never gotten a bad looking string from Boo. Matter of fact, I've never gotten one that didn't look absolutely great.

Don't those braids look GREAT!

The material string #1 definitely had a stiffer feel . . .almost plastic feeling. It also had a slight more shine to it than String #2 and the Excal Fast Flight. Here are a couple of pictures of the strands.

String #1

String#2

Excal Fast Flight

Weights . . .

String#1 133.5 grains
String#2 125.5 grains
Excal Fast Flight 121.5 grains

Speed . . .

I used the Exomax, a 411 grain arrow, brace height @ 1 1/8th inches from the riser, and clocked with a ProChronoDigital Chronograph. The temperature was 81 degrees and sunny.

String#1 . . . 323.5 FPS
String#2 . . . 323.8 FPS
Excal Fast Flight . . .325.2 FPS

My initial thoughts . . .neither string #1 nor #2 took very long to break in. I took about 15 shots each, did my adjusting and they stayed put on my brace height until I finished shooting them, 30 shots later. I adjusted them about 1/4 of an inch after the first 15 shots.

String #1 and String #2 definitely had less "aftershock" than the Excal Fast Flight and they were quieter too. I'm going to attempt a sound test later today or tomorrow, time permitting.

Give me your questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

The black and blue string is Angel Majesty and the tan and green string is SX2 made by Brownell.
When I was making the string I found that it wasn't long before the string stopped creeping. It stopped creeping on the rack much faster than any string material I've used so far.
These strings are supposedly faster, have less creep and be lower in noise and shock.
Scott, post everything you know about the new strings. You have 2 more strings coming. They are D97 and Ultra Cam. The prior should be nothing special. Both are served with 0.035" Angel Majesty.
The reason the blue and black string is so stiff is that it is impregnated with a resin that bonds the fibers and strands together. When you are sure the string has more or less stopped creeping burnish the string with a rag. Just get it good and warm. It will look like a skipping rope when your done.

great looking strings! do you find the boo strings more consistent on the crony for shot too shot variation in speed ? I just switched too the excal fast flight a while back and I love it compared too the excel . no more seperating on the end loops and holding up real well but still stretched a lot and took a while too settle in.

Yes, the shot to shot readings are more consistant. I may very well do the speed test again after a few more shots. The last three shots registered 325 for String #1. One other thing, the speed seemed to change if I aimed at different spots on the target. I decided to group the last three shots and got 325 FPS on all of them . . .two of the three were touching and the third was within 1/4 of an inch at 30 yards.

String #1's highest FPS readings came in at 326. . .I really thought the heaviest string would be the slowest. That would be normal, but, that may not the case here.

I'll do another speed test after I get more shots on the string.

its pretty interesting that the heavy string (12 gr) was reaching those faster speeds..i wonder what it would do if it was made a few strands shy to get it closer to the FF weight. I think i would like the stiffer material but i bet its a little rough on a dry fire..

Strum . . .I have dry-fired the stiffer string. I got the same result as I got with the softer string, no damage. However, I had the dampener system on the bow when it happened with the stiffer string. I'm not sure which material in which the string was made. I think it was the Xcel String. . . either that or the 452 Plus.

NO WAY!! . . .at least not with my bow.

When I first started testing the strings, I would zero in the scope with every string. I cocked the bow, remembered to adjust for the inch high, forgot to load the arrow after adjusting the scope . . .dry-fired.

I've stopped adjusting the scope. I've learned that all these new strings are pretty darn accurate . . .I'm not going to be able to tell a difference with my set-up. It's that close.

I've learned to adjust my aim point instead. Works just fine and there's less chance of a dry-fire.

fuzzy wrote:, for repeatable accurate chronie readings one must send the projectiles across the start and stop photo cells as close to the same place (center) and height all the while staying as perpendicular to the cells as one can every shot.
I tested this chronie theory last week and you are right. :) The target I'm shooting has nine dots about two inches apart. I get consistant reading at each individual dot . . .but, inconsistant across the board.

I was shooting 3-6 arrows at a time. I started noticing the differences about half way through the test. The center dot always seemed to get 325 FPS . . .the lower left corner dot always got 322/321 FPS.

I got side tracked with some auto repairs. It's a great day to do some shooting today. Cloudy, warm and very nice outside . . .other than all the pollen . . .man, we need some rain to wash that out of the air.

The chronie aperture is like a V shape.
The most accurate readings will be right in the middle and no more than 6 inches from the lens.

Pollen? I walked out my back door and got in my puke green Honda yesterday and started pulling out the driveway when I though "Dang, I don't have a green Honda". Backed up and took a hose and sprayed my car off good. It is still Silver..
