Anybody excited about the turkey season yet ?

Post by R.J. »

Man the weather has been crazy !

Only a few weeks ago local ponds still had ice .

Image

Now all snow any ice has melted and the Weather Man reports record high's !
Geese flying in from everywhere … and Tundra swans as well .

My wife and I drove into town to meet my daughter for lunch last Saturday , and change out her winter tires … On the way home we decided to drive North and scout some farms I hunt for turkeys .
( with a busy schedule , I wasn't sure when I would get chance again ? )

We saw many small groups … all were spooky and running away by the time I got the camera on them , but I was able to identify some long beards ( potential opening day targets ! )

I jack rabbit breaks cover as I drive back the lane on one farm .

Image

I catch a small group crossing the East field … couple “ nice size toms “ there .

Image
Image

On another farm I spot four other “ potentials “ at the South line fence .

Image

Further East , I get a quick picture of this cool looking “ thin beard “

Image

And at the last farm North , I get a quick picture of two mature toms sprinting thru the stubble .

Image

We head back home and take a slow walk around a local swamp pond … Lots of turtles out in the sun , and we bump two nest geese that are already working on their first hatch .

Just before I pull into our farm I spot one lone tom leading three hens on my neighbors property .

Image

Man I'm looking forward to opening day ! …

PS : Here are a couple pictures Rob H. sent me from up around his mom's place near Bancroft ... how would you like to see these in your back yard !

Tomorrow morning I will be waiting for that GOBBLEEEEEEE at first light. Running and gunning unless it is pouring rain and I packed a blind just in case.

I still have to check out my spots . But there is no hurry . They don`t tend to be there until about 1-2 weeks before .
I have went to them years ago early and was disappointed when couldn`t even find a track .

Great pics RJ. I'm pretty excited as well and hope to get out to my hunting spot on Sunday for some scouting too. Good luck everyone. :)

Nice pictures! The season starts April 14th here, can't wait. Killed a bird a few years back that was almost solid white. And no it wasn't tame. lol

Not excited yet, it's still a month away here.

Right now I'm fishing about every day. Been catching a lot of bluegills crappie & trout at the local lake. Cooler weather ahead in the coming week (more normal temperatures) after an early heat wave. Checked for mushrooms last week, but didn't find any yet. :(
