kinetic energy

Post by mtnjim »

we've all heard the speed arguments.

what may be more important and seems to be increasingly recognized is kinetic energy of the arrow.

how is is calculated?

is there a minimum KE to strive for?

what other considerations about KE should be recognized?

Here is a place that can calculate KE. http://archeryhq.com/ke-calculator

To me Ke is a plus for arrows shot at or under 30yds for punching power. After that a person relys more on speed and gives up KE to get a flatter trajactory to make up for yardage errors. My two cents. :)

I shoot a farely light arrow at 357 gr total weight

At 30 yds and under I rely totally on speed, any thing in front of my arrow should be a blow through.

At 30 yds and out is when I would start to worry about KE.
My fast little arrow slows down very fast so KE is now a big factor

First of all one only needs 45lbs of ke to pass thru a deer, at 350fps my 350grs sticks have 94.6lbs of ke and at 40yds impact is a couple inches lower than at 30yds, you need speed to make ke even with the heavy weights.

I'm not a speed freak, I'm a KE freak.

You got to watch the KE when using the larger cut broadheads, they do take a little more energy to get a complete pass through.

However, the energy produced by these crossbows is more than enough. Just add weight until you get what you want.

I like for my broadheads to stop within 30 yards after passing through a deer. That way, I don't have to extend my search into the next state when looking for my arrow. I hunt from the ground.
I'd rather wear out than rust out.
