recoil pads on crossbows

Post by Masboy »

I notice when shooting it,s hard too keep the butt of the stock in the same place all the time and it seems that a nice curved a little recoil pad would work great and also make my stock longer because it,s quite a bit short for me.I have the cheek piece built up too fit but now going too get the stock the right length with a more positive fit too my shoulder. I think it will feel much better and be a lot easier too shoot accurate in all positions.

You know, it makes sense as the Y25 has one on it. However, unless yours has a fat butt like it does, you will have to do some serious trimming to get it flush to fit, yes?

Masboy,

I got some c lear silicone adhesive with a tapered tip cut so that I could dispense a thin controlled line of glue width wise across the buttpad of the stock (not in the recesses). I applied 12 lines of glue. This completely solved the slippage problem. The glue can be easily removed with a fingernail if you should ever want to remove it. This is cheaper than a recoil pad but of course won't increase the length of pull.

Limbsaver has a slip on pad in several sizes that would do the trick. They also have number of stock specific pads (intended 4 different guns stocks) that you could screw on, even grind-to-fit pads in several sizes. I've used in my gunsmithing, very good products. Visit their website for listings.

I'm of average build and thought I would like a 1/2 inch pad for the stock but once I have all my hunting gear on then the stock would be too long. I may get a cheek piece for the new bow though.

Adding lengh to the the stock really changes multible things. Your holding weight will increase when shooting because of the frontend being pushed forward. I did this on one of my first stocks I made for myself because I thought I was it was to short. Heck, normal is 14" and I cranked it out there to 16. WoW, what a change. Hated it. Made it feel like I was holding up the world at the other end of my bow. Needless to say that got cut back. If I were you I would take layers of cardboard and try it layer after layer until it feels right for you. Tale a measurement from the trigger back to the end of your last cardboard, write it down and make something permanent fron there. You could take a Power miterbox and cut the end flat and then gorrilla glue a wood piece back on. Best of luck on it. Just keep track of that trigger the butt length.

thanks for the ideals guys! I will put a temporary something on too try for length and go from there. I,m and old trapshooter from way back and know how important gun fit is and always made my stock fit me but just never thought much about it because I was so busy getting my arrows, string ,servings, scope, hha and all too work the best I could that I overlooked one of the most important things stock fit!!!! I,m not getting smarter the older I get that,s for sure!!!!!

I put a rifle pad on my Exomax for a while. Most all of the pads have a metal plate in them and to grind the pad I had down to Excal. size I got through to it on top. Used a magic marker to touch it up. All this worked fine, but I put a walnut hooked butt plate on it and played with that a while. I'm back to shooting it in the y25 stock, that I lightened a bit.I havent found the "perfect setup" yet but its fun to play some. You can do bunches of stuff if you've got the time to spend.

Being a small guy, the recoil pad on my Y25 made the XBow way to long for me; solution? Well, lets say that it came out a whole lot better than it sounds but what I did was to trace out the butt of the stock sens pad on to the middle of a vespa tire and used my dremel to fashion the edges into something that looks good. It came out bringing the Xbow and sight considerably closer to my body so that now I can rest my foregrip arm on to my chest and have a lot steadier hold.

For a really light weight "pad" you can use the soul of a flip flop shoe. They got any color you could want and you can contact cement them on.I have done this a time or two in the past. It wasnt my idea originally, I saw it on a silouhette(sp?) rifle years ago that the guy had to do something to make weight restrictions.Once ground to fit they are better looking than you would think, and ok in the durability dept.
