Gout can be excruciatingly painful and is no joke for sure. Make sure he follows the Docs orders on avoiding certain foods; some of them can promote flare ups. Hope he has a speedy recovery and you two can get back in the woods.

Prayers are with him. The gout is pretty nasty my brother gets it when he eats a lot of red meat, that what the doc says anyway.
