Just Bought.....Squirrel Skinner

Post by awshucks »

Don't laugh yet. Got to be 65 yrs old and watched the video here, took the guy 28 seconds.

Next thing I know, I'm out $25.75, lol. It's on the 'tail cut' method and looks slicker than snot. Your opinons please?

Been using that method since I was a teenager, but called it "shirt & pants".

Instead of the skinner just lay the tail on the ground (firm ground!), put your foot on the tail to hold it, and pull up on the hind legs.
The skinner should work fine, too.

One tip - when you cut through the tail there are two white tendons just under the skin on the back - cut them with your knife blade tip. Hard to explain, but if you look you'll find them next to the skin after you cut through the tailbone.

Now that is a fast and easy way to skin your squirrels. Keeps the squirrel hair off the meat also. Great little tool.

I'm waiting for Big 58's opinion, lol. As to this:
Instead of the skinner just lay the tail on the ground (firm ground!), put your foot on the tail to hold it, and pull up on the hind legs.
I'm afraid that's not as easy for me as it used to be w/ reds. I shot a LOT of reds..........

I figure I sit to hunt them, sit while the OL cooks them, now, I can sit and clean the lil buggers!

Life is good!

The tail method is what I use and it works well for me.
To clean the rest of the way I use spam scissors.

I like it. Everytime we try the traditional method of pulling on the tail, I end up with a tail in my hands that is not connected to a squirrel.
I know a young hunter who will find one of these in his stocking.
Thanks for the link Dan!

We used to make some similar to that back in the day with slots to hold the back legs. Cool design! Thanks for sharing!!!

I clean'em like wabi. Hold the tail, cut through it, step on it and pull up on the hind legs and strip pretty much all of the skin off.

Frying up some squirrel right now as I type this. :D

Where I grew up, everybody skinned squirrels like munch said - make a slit across the back, stick fingers in, and work skin off in both directions. Works best with two experienced squirrel skinners. Like playing tug-a-war with the squirrel skin. :)

Man, they were good! :D

The tail cutting portion is the critical part. Do it wrong and you pop the tail off when you pull. Do it right and you won't have any issues.

Of course, when cutting the tail, you've got to be careful otherwise you'll end up like me last year.........
