Coyotes !?? !!

Post by Old-New-Guy »

While my wife is digesting me getting a Crossbow ... she often feels I don't need more "toys". ... I'm a musician too and have several guitars . Once she asked me if I could play more than one ... at the same time ? I asked her if she could ride more than one horse at a time ? So we agreed to disagree if just one of anything is enough if you love doing doing it.

I read about "j.kurg " and his first coyote . I'm amazed and impressed ! I live in the flatlands of West Texas. I have friends , ranchers and farmers. And at times coyotes really become a problem. I gone out with them to help dispatch the problem. Those suckers stay far away if they spot you. We also don't have much in the way of trees. You have to use a rifle and scope to do any good.

But a crossbow might work when they come into the home area to "take" some chickens or rabbits.

Has anyone had luck dispatching them in open areas ?

It can be done, but it is very tricky. You will find most guys that shoot a coyote with a crossbow are presented an opportunity by fluke, while deer/turkey hunting.
If it is an encroachment issue then you will have more possibilities presented, like a roof, or other structures on the land close to the homestead.
If you are not willing to learn, nobody can help you, if you are willing, nobody can stop you.

Killed my first this year. I'd say your best bet might be to put up a blind within 30 yards of the coop or where ever you know they will be. Let them get conditioned to the blind for some time then get out there to get them. Maybe a distraction/ attractant like a mechanical wounded bunny might help keep their eyes off the blind as they approach.

That was exactly the case for me David and if I didn't have my brother with me on the radio I most likely would have never even known that coyote was coming in from behind me. Awesome for sure but just plain old lucky. :)

Hey Old New guy,

If the little lady gives you a hrad time about getting more "toys", just ask her how many pairs of shoes she can wear at one time.

Oh yeah, them's fight'in words!!

You've hit on the one area where you would be 'under-gunned'. If you want to play around, try the ground blind suggestions.

Wanna kill some yotes? Get a .223 and have at them, lol.

I think I'd take both weapons to the ground blind a time or two just to see............
