Not so proud...

Post by seabee401 »

New member that is. Of the "dry fire club". It was only a matter of time i guess. Thought I was always careful. Swapped out strings from FFF to Standard Excel string that came w my E-cet because of some serving seperation. started sighting in w/ the brand new Excel string and I did it. Got that sinking feeling when nothing hit the target. Aside from the obvious, the limbs , is there anything else that gets affected like d-bars bending and such? The string did not come off. But did stretch to about 1/4" below the first line on rail. after checking over I fired several more shots. seems o.k.But I guess I cant really be sure.Do you think the string should be replaced? What about limbs? No visible cracks or splinters but still worried about future shooting.I did not have string suppressors. Do have D-bars. Any thoughts or advice? :?
Thanks :)

I had a partial dryfire several months ago and got a big limb splinter from it (unless it was already there). On advise from this forum and Excalibur I broke off the splinter and went on shooting and hunting. I will do a limb swap once deer season is over.

Just curious robertyb... How did you do a partial dryfire? Also, where on the limb did you notice splinter?
Yeah your right Excals are the best and so are the people on this forum. :D
Good luck in the woods. Be safe. :)

Joined the club recently myself. The cotton ball swipe and shooting it the next day confirmed no harm to the crossbow. These type of incidents that we all go through at some time help confirm we purchased great crossbows.

I had a partial dryfire not long after buying my Vortex. Not sure what happened cause I always look to make sure I have string/nock contact before shooting. I was on a bench rest and when I shot it sounded funny. Looked at the target and saw no arrow but then saw it sticking up in the ground a couple of feet in front of the target. I looked over the bow and saw no damage so kept shooting with no POI change at all. I did have a wrinkle in the cock vane on the arrow. About three months later while target shooting I noticed a small split in my left limb on the top side towards me about half way on the limb. Ran my finger over it and found the limb splinter. It was about an inch long. I assume it happened when I had the partial dryfire but could have been there when I bought the bow.
As stated earlier I broke it off and am shooting the bow till deer season ends before getting new limbs.

Partial dryfires often occur when the arrow isn't inserted all the way back to touch the string. And, sometimes if the serving diameter isn't big enough. Ask me how I know...
