"Arrows 101" for complete newbies (me)

Post by hummer »

I'm a lifelong rifle hunter just taking up x-bowing, and finding there's a lot to learn. Buying arrows, for example: vane placement, fletching types & orientation, insert & nock options . . . and I haven't even gotten to the pointy end yet . . . my head's going to explode :? . Is there someplace where all of this basic stuff is explained for dummies like me? I appreciate your patience.

I would say just get some arrows from Big John over in the trading post. I recently bought a dozen and they are great !

LOL! I was just going to suggest exactly the same thing! John KNOWS his stuff! You just tell him what your bow is and let The Magician figure out all those answers for you!!

Cheers,
Nog

I your in the lower 48 give Jerry a call @ South Shore Archery he does all that stuff too . Has some new arrows that Black Eagle is making for him called Spinal Tapps. The front 6 inches of the shaft is twice as thick as the back. Front ID. 0.2445 back of the shaft 0.300 . Very good guy to work with shipping cost is very low.

There's nothing wrong with the arrows that came with your bow

I would shoot then for a while, then look at custom or buying components and making your own.

As for BH's get a good quality head or one that you think is the one. BH's are a personal choice and what we like you might not.

I like expandables others will say fixed.

Good luck which ever way you decide to go and congrats on the new bow.

I would learn what you can.....Buy the components......and roll your own. It's pretty simple and there's a certain satisfaction that you get when you shoot a critter with something you built. I'm no "expert" but my arrows hit where I'm aiming and that's ok for me.
