Limb damage?

Post by chenessfan »

Hey guys
I just registered and am not yet all familiar with this forum so please excuse any missteps or the like
Some words to myself: I live in Germany and am the proud owner of a Phoenix, bought last year in November. Absolutely love the bow, very happy with it.

However, a few weeks ago I had the string (standart Excel string) break at the ear while shooting, resulting in a kinda-dryfire. I have no idea why the string failed like that, it did not show excessive signs of wear or anything. I had redone the center serving twice but that was all.
Anyway, no big problem, I saw no damage done to the crossbow and put on a new string. Then I cocked it and rubbed down the limbs with a cotton ball as I had read to do after a dry fire. And sure enough, I noticed a small spot where the paint had come off and a tiny splinter caught on the cotton.

Now I really don't care about the paint, that's purely cosmetic but I worry about the structural integrity of the limb. The splinter is right behind the dissipator pads, just the area that I imagine would be stressed the most in a string failure incident.
I don't think the bow will blow up on the next shot but I'd rather nor run any risk, the breaking string was shock enough for me.
What do you guys think? Should I ask for an exchange? I know the bow is covered by warranty but I don't know if this even poses a reason to have it exchanged... and I don't want to bitch about something that is completely harmless so I figured I'd ask you first before contacting the seller.
Thanks for your input
Lukas

Edit: I realize my links are not working... how does one post pics in here?
Edit II: Got it, thanks deerstalker :)

When you are logged into Photobucket select View Library and hold the cursor over the photo that you want to post on the CB site. In the upper right corner of the Photobucket photo you will see a gear wheel. Selecting this gear wheel you will have the option of "Get Media Links". Select direct link and it will copy this direct link data. Go to your CB page and open your post. After you have entered your comments select the Img tab, (9th from the left) at the top of your post. The cursor will stop between,Img Img, the & ][ and you paste the Photobucket copied data there. Preview your post and your picture, (photo), should be there. Hope this helps.

Example of Photobucket direct link data.

Here's a quick video showing how to post photos

http://youtu.be/qQdgs6w_ZCY

I didn't show how to upload photos to Photobucket or similar site,I'm assuming you already did that. This is just showing how to link the photos to the Excalibur Forum Post. NOTE: If you ever delete the photo from Photobucket album you will lose the photo from your Excal Forum post.

A couple of tips on the string. Take a look and make sure there are no burs where the string relief cuts are. Also be sure to wax the loops on the new one pretty heavy.

As far as a splinter, you'd be better off emailing the photo to excalibur. I have a 15 year old vixen with a splinter and it shoots at the velocity that is advertized. Accuracy is as good as it was new.
Had a phoenix with a splinter that shot a good deal under velocity and got new limbs for it.

To me that splinter looks very small and insignificant to your Excaliburs performance. I would lightly sand it out.

I have a limb splinter just over an inch long at almost the same location on my left limb. I broke it off and kept shooting. No change of POI and has several hundreds of shots on it since I first noticed the splinter. I forget about it being there most of the time.

As stated above, the splinter is very small and not much of an issue since it is on the inside of the limb.
I would continue shooting and be watchful of that area.
If it continues to grow then contact Excalibur about it.

I don't know if any one remembers how big the "splinter" on my limbs at Boofest were but I think it was ginormous. Anyways it shot just fine with no change of POI. I think the splinter was big enough to shoot and kill a deer.

It didn't look all that big till Danny pulled it off!!! The pale off white color under the splinter contrasted nicely with the beautiful black paint job that were on the limbs too!lol

Thanks guys for all the helpful feedback. I think for now I'll just sand it down and keep an eye on it... if some guys have experienced much bigger splinters on their limbs and the bow still shot fine I suppose I should be good to go :D

Not sure how you make endless loop strings but mine have the same amount of strands on all parts.

I am not a string maker but please correct me if I am wrong but in the picture above by chenessfan would that break point be 1/2 the strands until you make and place the other serving on the ends and then from that point to the other side of the string be 2x the threads ? I mean is the other serving to hold the loop together? and it then doubles from that point?

That,s the way my endless loop strings are. I make a 32 strand string an the endloops are only 16 strands .
