Deer geometry - shot angle practice

Post by VixChix »

It's that time of year again when I like to post this link to BowSite's Deer Geometry Interactive Shot Placement game.

Great practice and helps pass the time when we're not in the stand.

How are your scores?

This would be a game i'd actually play. Not really into candy crush...
I'll check it out when I'm on a computer for sure though. Thanks for the link!

Cool game. I scored a 52 first time and 96 the second. Pretty amazing the difference in shot placement with a bow vs. with a rifle.

I don't agree with most of those shots Kevin. Not saying they wouldn't kill a deer, but I usually hold a bit lower and farther forward.

BTW - I only scored in the 60s first try. That running deer was pure guesswork.

I don't agree with all of them either - they seem to be aiming for the best of double-lung shots but not heart shots. It's good practice to think about the angles and to notice the risk factor indicators for each shot.

I've killed a lot of deer with high lung hits (with my sighting method a close deer is a high hit), but those low lung hits leave a better blood trail.

I would hold off on most of those shots with a bow, its a very cool game though. :)

I agree! Most of those I'd be waiting for a better shot or passing on. I think they offer those presentations to be able to associate the high risk factor and hopefully discourage the shooters from taking them. After each shot in the game there is a brief assessment of the presentation which is really good.

Great post, I feel even better about passing up the doe I had sighted in. It was not a rookie shot at all, she was standing on a 45º degrees angle straight ahead of me with some smaller trees in the way as well, if she was facing away, it would have been way better.

Thanks for posting, it certainly is beneficial for me!

Glad to hear the discussion on those shots. I was wondering if the "heart" area shots were frowned upon. I know rifles are different but I hold in the lower right quadrant with shooting a firearm. Most of those shots were further back and somewhat higher. It was a learning experience for me.

I killed one just like that with a vertical bow from a sitting position back in 95.
it was the hardest shot I have ever taken.
