Cocking 380 Matrix Noisy

Post by Outbackrider »

Hello, I've been in the market for a first crossbow.
Last year I went to cabelas and shot several excal's
I didn't buy do to to the limb size, now with the Matrix 380
And the value that is there, I went and shot one... In cocking it,
It was real noisy, squeaking etc. so much so, I couldn't tell if it had clicked.
And then one time the string hung on the dry fire and it wouldn't go the
Final inch...was this me, or does it sound like the bow had an issue..
Granted, I can't bench press 500lbs, but I can pull my compound at 70lbs
Without issue... I liked the matrix, but am concerned it may not be fun to shoot if I have this issues? Thanks.

The dry-fire issue, did it happen when cocking the bow? Like you couldn't quite get the bow to full draw and tried to let down? Because that would be on you, and it'd be working as it should. Once you get the string past the ADF, (anti-dry fire) the latch will catch a string that is not properly loaded from firing. It could not have been that a properly loaded arrow would cause the ADF to engage, but your lacking a whole lot of details for me to really know what you mean. Also note that you cannot cock this crossbow with the safety ON and this might explain your inability to get that last inch.

Regarding the noise while cocking the crossbow, yes, that is unusual. I have shot many excaliburs and have never heard this from any bow in their line. I have seen this with a lot of reverse draw crossbows and compounds.

Have cabela's go over the bow, tighten every bolt and screw while your there, just because there selling them doesn't mean you have the right salesman.

The matrix is the hardest cocking bow I've ever shot, more so than even my Equinox. That's what happens with that much draw weight. One has to be strong enough to get the string up against the latches to trigger them with some force. It's a great bow but, much as I like the narrower limbs, at 73 and previously cut shoulders and back my Vortex and phoenix wit just have to do until the narrower version is available at lower pull weight. (Have not tried cocking the 355).
Depending on what's squeaking, some silicone spray may be an answer.
Vortex, Phoenix, single-shot rifles and handguns.
Incurable tinkerer.
Why hunt? Simple, it's BASIC. Why breath?!

Shorten the rope cocker so that the string is 2 inches higher (or more) when both hooks are engaged.

Absolutely, my Matrix 355 is easier to cock compared to my sold Equinox. I knew I didn't need anymore power and so far my ADF is in my head.

The 355 will not shrug off a dryfire like it's older, longer limbed cousins. Anyone want to guess which model has the highest limb warranty of all bows? Anyone want to guess why?
I put one on my 355 and have not seen an issue in using it. No harm in not having it as long as you understand the consequences when the dryfire occurs.

I've now cocked, loaded and shot my Matrix 380 almost 1,000 times and have to Strongly Concur.
The ONLY noise is the "Click" when it engages the trigger. Every Single Time.

As for cocking this bow, I have no issues. In fact, I find it easier than the Exomax was - likely due to the shortened stroke perhaps. Have cocked and shot this one up to 50+ times a session, and I Ain't (unfortunately) no Spring Chicken anymore...

Yes it's very unusual for it to make noise while cocking it. In fact I have a hard time understanding what would be making the noise in the first place. Was it the factory excalibur cocking rope? Perhaps a very worn c/rope? Maybe they should consider taking that one off from being a demo!

If that's why you haven't bought one, rest assured that this isn't normal!

Thanks for all of the replies!!!!
It was a demo unit, didn't show a lot of wear on the string...
It really creaked from about 1/2 stroke to the top of the stroke, the
I did notice the cocking rope was quite worn...sounds like that was
Part of the problem..also I think the safety had something to do with
Not getting it locked in..
Sounds like the 355 is a choice of a lot of you... What would the best
355 set up be?
Thanks...
