This is the first year that crossbows were included in our archery(primitive) season. I did hunt some with my vert bow as I took the course this fall also but for the last 2 weeks I stuck with my excal.
Tuesday evening I had the first deer I saw all season (sitting regularly since Sept 9th) at 37 yds and would not offer a shot. She winded me I believe, but did not spook, and just walked off. That hurt.
Tonight I went in knowing this would be the last sit before polishing up the .270 for rifle season (tomorrow). The same doe came out, this time coming in to 18ish yds and stood there. I was all but out of legal light and I debated not pulling as she was quartering toward me hard. I got zeroed in, and committed...
It definitely wasn't the perfectly presented first shot I had pictured. I gave her lots of time, she ran 55ish yards, single lung.
I owe you all heaps for the wealth of knowledge, stories, products and general conversation.
What a rush. Very first crossbow/archery deer.
