Point blank range for a crossbow?

Post by learn2flyfish »

What would be considered acceptable over/under variation from the point of aim with a crossbow? 2", 3" or even 4"?

No more than 3" for me, even though the target area is around 10" on a deer.

I sight in at 25 yards with my Phoenix and use a "center of the kill zone" hold on any deer out to 30 yards. Haven't kept count, but haven't lost a deer in a few years now with that method.
(Hits are within 3" of point of aim.)

On a 1 pin vertical bow I have set the pin using a 12 in circle .Hold center at 10 yds.set it to hit high(on the circle) back up 5 yds. at a time your done at the yardage that falls outside the circle. Arrow speed/weight will affect yours results .

Before I had a reticle compensating scope I did what wabi does.
I started with a 20yd zero and would hold center of killzone out to 25 and "top of the back" for 30 to 35. But since most shots were 25, I started to zero at 25yds and hold center of killzone out to 30.

I ranged a deer at 20 yards by eye and held low because the deer knew I was there and I aimed for the drop before bolting off....let arrow fly and I just missed the underside of the deer's chest as the deer never dropped on the sound of arrow release....went over to my arrow and paced it off at 29 yards thinking it was at 20 yards with my 550gr arrow....funny stuff these deer do and don't do  ....
