Who Pre stretches their backup
My backup string in waiting is always pre stretched, waxed and ready go.
I use the back up for about 20 to 30 shots so as to settle it to a set brace height.
That way I know if I have to switch in the field I am ready to go with the approximately the same POI as the primary.

Same here, switch backup each year. Hunt one string one year hunt the backup the next.

Re: Who Pre stretches their backup
I have a Boo string as my go-to and about 2-3 from other string makers that are waiting in the wings. Don't anticipate using the old backups anytime soon though. But like you said, it's good to plan for the, "oh s#%t moment" and having a pre-stretched backup is peace of mind.

If you'll take a paper clip and attach the 2 loop ends you'll have perfect brace height when you put your back up on . Same brace height = same Poi

Will give it a try.8ptbuk wrote:If you'll take a paper clip and attach the 2 loop ends you'll have perfect brace height when you put your back up on . Same brace height = same Poi
Makes perfectly good sense.
Have never really thought of it.
Should maintain original twist at time of removal.

Anything to keep the ends from unwinding will work: twisty from a loaf of bread, piece of string, light zip tie, short section of wire....... The options are huge and cheap.colouredchameleon wrote:Will give it a try.8ptbuk wrote:If you'll take a paper clip and attach the 2 loop ends you'll have perfect brace height when you put your back up on . Re: Who Pre stretches their backup
I put mine in my string jig under gross HEAVY tension for days....it will then go on the bow and get shot until the stretching stops. Then it's a legit backup. I also have my rail marked for proper b.h..

I shoot mine in, then keep it under a pile of pressure till it is time to put it to work.

Re: Who Pre stretches their backup
Its always good to pre-stretch the string to get the bulk of the initial creep removed. More so with a flemish.
Even after a week pre-stretching, a hot day here will cause it to stretch fast again. So now I heat the string to about 125f on the stretching jig. Preheating the string slowly removes the excess wax and causes the string to elongate to its maximum in about only 10 minutes. Its the only way for me to stop the initial fast creep we get here in hot weather.

Re: Who Pre stretches their backup
Pre-stretching is not a requirement to get the same POI as a stretched string.
You will get the same POI if you use the idential string and same brace height.
However, if you do not pre-stretch the string, then you will need to maintain it more closely while hunting. Your brace height could change slightly when it's cocked during your hunting hours(depends on who made your string and the type of string).
I have shot my backup strings . . .first thing I did when I got a new string was shoot it at least 50 shots.

Re: Who Pre stretches their backup
I understand the idea of pre-stretching.
However, doesn't a string "relax" after the tension is removed? Doesn't a string that has been prestretched shorten again after it has been removed from the bow? Does it make a difference how long after prestretching and removal the string has been stored?
String makers, what's your verdict?
