String Prices

Post by JRS »

First off, I am not complaining or pointing fingers, but rather trying to get an understanding. I found a couple strings, still in the original Excal packaging, for carved tip bows, in my collection of accessories. I bought these around 2000-01, before mag tips were on the scene. Price tags are still on. Endless loop Dacron string was $5.99 and a Flemish string was $12.95. I looked at prices today on sites of two shops nearby, and the Dacron string was around $30! Mag tip strings are in the $35 range. What has caused the price of a string to increase 500%?

Prices of every has gone up. It's all about supply and demand. In the end they reflect what folks can afford and are willing to pay. With strings in particular, not only has the cost of materials gone up, but labour cost has as well. The strings of yesteryear were mass produced and did not last as long as the custom ones made today. When everything is taken into account the price is reasonable and reflects the quality of the product one gets.

Pretty much what I figured, but the price increase seemed excessive. Oh yeah, thanks Comfy, I am still shooting one of your strings that I got from your a few years ago :D

Excalibur strings are cheap compared to what a string and cables cost for a compound bow . And you don't have to pay for a press or for a shop to install em' . Seems pretty affordable to me

I can tell you that dacron is the cheapest to buy then D97 is next which retails out at $30+ per spool. After that they jump up $40 to $55 a spool fer other materials. It doesn't take but a min to spend $150 fer 2 spools n spool of servin material. Yup Danny does make n sell good strings both dacron & D97 material. Its those other strings ppl want that cost so much. Not many ppl. want dacron or D97 anymore, most want 452X or X or Astro Flite - Excel - XS2that stuff s like buyin gold high as a cats back!

I make my own but given the price of material and time involved I can't see selling them at $30...much less $15. Even a retired OF like myself has better thing to do with his time than make strings for someone who bitches about spending $30. That said, the factory Excal strings are a real bargain at their current prices.

I agree. I've stopped making strings for sale a few years back. The price one gets does not compensate for the time and effort it takes to make a top-notch string.
Of course if one is in it just for the money, one could cut corners and twist up a substandard string in no time, and make it worth their while. However a string-maker who takes pride in their work would never jeopardize their integrity and reputation. I found in life, when it's all said and done, that one doesn't get more out than they put in.
