Mechanical broadheads.....

Post by globemountain »

Looking for input from those who have used mechanical broadheads such as NAP Spitfires or Rocket broadheads with blade retention bands. I have used heads like these with vertical bows with success. Just wondering if anyone has info to share about their experience with these heads and Excalibur crossbows. ..

I used Rage 3 blades for a couple of years and they worked great.

I've now gone back to using Wasp Jak-Hammers

They use a rubber "O" ring to hold the blades
I contacted Wasp Archery and they recommended
using 2 "O" rings when shooting out of my Excal.

I used the Rocket 100 gr. 4 blade Hammerhead 2" x 2" cut for many years out of my older Exocet and the huge hole, short tracking jobs and great blood trails left me with a huge smile every time one zipped through a deer..

I bought some Grim Reaper X-Bow 100 gr. At 40yds. they hit same POI as my field points out of the 405 Matrix with 18" BEE's. The 100gr. Ram-Cats also hit same POI as field tips @ 40yds.

After using Thunderheads and other fixed blade heads for years in vertical bows, I have tried two or three different mechanical broadheads out of my Excalibur. Finally settled on Jak-Hammers and I have been very satisfied with their results . Sometimes I am still amazed at the bloodtrails they leave . In my opinion most all mechanical heads are good performers but I like the simplicity of the bands for blade retention .I do double band mine and have never had any problems and I don't have to worry about them opening in flight . People are gonna use what they have success with , myself included . I'm just a firm believer in large cut heads . Big hole=more blood and these Excaliburs we have are more than powerful enough to push them thru ! They fly exactly like my field points and are actually a little cheaper than most of the other ones .

Used Wasp JakHammers for years and had good luck with them double banded. Quit using them when one went through a buck (heart shot luckily) and didn't open. Had it missed the heart I may not have recovered that deer.
I had killer several deer with the JakHammers before that shot and always had very short blood trails, but that one failure sent me looking for good fixed blade heads.

Had very good success with the Spitfires in 125 grains. Great blood trails, and Much Shorter recoveries than I ever experienced with the Boltcutters.

Did a bit of a "Torture Test" with the Spitfires - shot one repeatedly at 35 yards from my Matrix 380 into my Rancher Buddy's broadhead target. Didn't take long to realize some rather serious straying in the accuracy department. From the holes on the target face we determined that at shot # 4, the blades began to deploy upon firing. First one blade (shot # 4) then 2 (shot # 5) then all 3 (shot # 6). Held tight through the first three. Suppose banding them would help, but I simply wanted to know how much they would take before failing in this manner.

Cheers,
Nog

Interesting how the Excal X-Acts never get discussed in any of these conversations, do they just not perform as well ???? I've only harvested one deer with a bow, and it was using the X-Acts, so I have nothing to compare them too.

do they make the Hammerhead 4 blade any more? and when its time to use two bands where on the Ferrel do you all place the second band, on top of the 1st one middle of the Ferrel, up above the 1st one, or below the 1st one?? just asking so i don't place it wrong and end up making the broad head fail. i want to use the hammerheads this season coming up and have used the spitfire maxx 100gr for the past 2 seasons with decent results.. I am looking for a larger cutting surface... and i think i may have found it. I know my Equinox has more than enough power to push it deep into the dirt so that's not a concern.

Bowhunter1, the Hammerhead 4 blade was a limited run and I wish that they were produced again. The holes in deer were just huge. On my Equinox I always used two blades and added a third this year when my wife used them out of her 380 but did not get a shot off in 2013.
I placed the elastic on the blade indents.
